Use continuation sheets as necessary. Built in 1913, this house is an example of the Bungalow style of architecture which was commonly built in Utah during this period of time. The house is c~sed of a long rectangular floor plan layout which is divided down the center of the structure with a bearing wall that supports the upper floor. The structure is capped by a gable roof which is intersected by a cross gable. The upper floor rooms with their sloping ceilings are created below the gables and receive light through windows at each gable wall. The structure rests on a raised concrete foundation which supports the brick walls which rise one story. The front end of the house is graced by a porch which is covered by a flat roof which is supported by symmetrically arranged brick piers. This porch was originally designed and built with brick piers and a balustrade on top of the porch, all of which has been removed. The interior of the house contains several elements reminiscent of the Arts &Crafts style commonly employed in bungalows, including dropped ceil ing beams in the main parlor. Alterations to the house include the addition of a wood frame porch enclosure at the rear. It appears that this work was done during the 1920's when portions of the interior were remodeled. The only associated outbuilding is a brick carriage house which appears to date to the construction of the house. Four days later mortgages totaling $4,100 were taken out on the property likely signaling time of construction of this house. Kline first came to Utah as assistant to H. A. Strauss, general electrical engineer for the Walkeneau Electrical Construction company of Chicago, who, at that time, had a contract for the electrification of the Bamberger Electric railroad. Kline had charge of all of the work. He then returned to Chicago for a short period and returned to Ogden, moving his family here in 1910, and had charge of the construction of the electrical distributing system of the Merchants Light & Power company, which he managed until about 1912. Mr. Kline then assisted the Electrical Bond & Share company of New York in the consolidation of the various electrical properties in the state of Utah and in bringing about the organization of the Utah Power & Light company. After the Merchants Light & Power company was taken over by the Utah Power & Light company, Kline became the general manager of the Ogden Rapid Transit company, and was chief engineer and general manager of that company when it was consolidated with the Logan Rapid Transit company and constructed the line of electric railway known as the Utah Idaho Central Railroad company, from Ogden to Preston, Idaho. He remained in this position until about 1916, when he resigned and took a position as vice president of an electrical company operating in the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. At this time the Klines sold their property to Marshall J. & Charlotte Herrington who owned the property from 1917 to 1932 when it appears that the bank foreclosed on the property. In 1936 the property was acquired by Elizabeth B. Cardon, in whose family the property remained until being purchased by its current owners, Samuel L. & Mary Lou Stephens. The house is listed in the National Register of historic places as part of the Eccles Avenue Historic District. -;: T « 21 MI, ..:P=> 12 M I . 17 I a;: Gr-:' '. ~ CIT y ;n ".' / • ~ ,...·CPTrl OGD E N .:.
