NPS Fonn National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section No. § Page 1 Ogden, Weber County, UT Narrative Statement of Significance The Carver Apartments were built in 1917 for James S. Carver, a well known local grocer, who at the time lived in the residence next door at 541 22 nd Street. Mr. Carver and his wife Ina had lived at that location since 1900, with their eight children . In 1906 the Carver's bought the property where the current apartments are located , from H.C. Corey, and was aforementioned they had the apartments constructed in 1917. The apartments were advertised as a "cozy residence place for families" ; and that they were a home with modern living conveniences near the business district, but still in the residential section of the city. James S. Carver was born in Slatersville, Weber County, Utah in 1859. He was the son of John and Mary Ann Eames Carver. In 1881 he married Mary Wood in Salt Lake City, she passed away in 1895. He then married Ina Heller Head in 1897, spending the remainder of his life with her. In 1889 Mr. Carver became interested in the mercantile business in Plain City , where he operated a general mercantile store. In 1895 he moved to Ogden and was employed as a manager in the grocery store of h.L. Griffin. In 1898 he then co-owned a store, the Carver & Wilcox Store, and in 1900 he took over sole position of the market. He continued in the grocery business until 1922, becoming very active in retailing organizations. He was president of the Ogden Retail Grocer's Association for several years, president of the Butchers and Grocers of Ogden, director of the National Retail Grocers Association for two years, and president of the Asparagus Club. The Carver Club was also organized, a club that was formed to pay tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Carver while they were active in the national organizations. During World War I he was appointed a member to the Hoover Food Administration , and was called to Washington to confer on food problems. In 1926, he was appointed health inspector of Ogden City, which he held till his death in 1932. He was also active with the Elks lodge, community and political affairs , and the LOS Church . After Mr. Carver passed away in 1932, his wife Ina took over the title of the apartments. She lived in one of the apartments, had a Beauty shop in another that was run by Helen Bramwell, and rented out the other six . She continued to due to so for years. The Carver Apartments rema ined in the family until the 1960s. They continue to be used as apartments today. United States Department of the Interior National Park Service OMS No 1024-0018.
