A man by the name of Henry Steele owned this whole quarter in 1883. Mr. Steele was a Civil War Veteran, a US Marshal, and later on a Weber County police officer. At one time he was a professional carpenter, so it's safe to assume he built his o\\n home, which he and his wife Sine decided to do in 1892. They took out a mortgage for the amount of $1500, and two more for $2000 and $3100 just a few years later. However, they had to default on these loans, probably because of the Cleveland Depression. The man they defaulted to, Hans D. Voight, sold the house right away and it ended up in the hands of John Whittaker, his wife Mary, and their seven children in 1906. John and Mary were both immigrants from England. John was a machinist for the SP Co. He died of "paralysis" in1907. Mary remarried soon after, to a man that had been living in the house before John died. His name was James Lewis, and he died quite soon afterwards, and was completely omitted from Mary's obituary, perhaps because of the scandalous nature of the whole affair. In 1917, she remarried again, this time a Mr. Westergard. They eventually moved out of the house. In 1921, a man by the name of Mark Hardman bought the house. He was a farmer, car dealer, and former branch president of the Australia L.D.S.Mission. He only lived there a couple years, then let two of his daughters, Mabel and Edna rent it. Mabel married a man by the name of Adolphus House in 1924 and they bought the home from her father. They sold it soon afterwards to Dan Bozo and his "ife Annie, who took out two mortgages totaling $2500. These were presumably to build the Store out front. They sold it the same year to Charles Owen. He moved in "ith his wife and nine children and opened the Owen Grocery store in 1928. During the Great Depression, in 1936, they started renting out rooms to make ends meet. In 1943, a grandson, Junius Owen, bought the house and took over the business. He died in 1957. His wife, Irene continued to live in the house, renting out the other apartments. She also continued to operate the grocery store for a few more years. It was later renamed Lei's Grocery and presumable came under different management. Today the store is no lo~er in use. However, the current owner, Mr. Robert Brimhall, runs a fence company from his home. ~ ~ r--------------------------- ----------------------------- ------------ ----------------------------. o .... -~r---------------------------~~~~~--~----------------------------------------------------------1-en 28.
