There are four windows and a central door placed with bilateral s)DUDetryacross the front facade and an end-wall chimney at each gable end. The house is constructed of local black rock (basalt) and displays meticulous craftsmanship in its stonework. All the stone blocks on the front facade are well squared and the mortar joints are beaded in high reiief. These mortar joints are raised approximately 1/2 inch and are of a uniform width, approximately 3/4 inch. Only the front facade displays cut stone and beaded mortar joints, the other three facades consisting of stuccoed rubble rock. Also on Beaver) granite grani te the front of the house is a very unusual stone cross ~ble (unique in t3at terminates in a gable at the top. The top is covered with brown coping and the coping rolls into scrolls that form brackets for a sphere. The woodwork on the house includes a vernacular interpretation of an Eastlake style porch, the only such example still extant in Beaver. The eaves are trimmed with a plain, yet substantial, Greek Revival style cornice that form boxed returns on the ~ble ends. Circa 1885 a one room lean-to was added on to the rear of the original two room house. It is built of a local pink rock (tuff) that comes from a quarry in th Beaver River Canyon. The pink rock quarry was commercially exploited beginningc. 1~8l, and because it was so much easier to work than the black basalt, the tuff soon became the exclusive building rock. Also at this same time, a pink rock granary with a basement was built towards the rear of the property. It is two rooms and its rock is well cut and well layed. The second addition to the house was constructed c. 1895 and is situated on the rear, giving the home a rectangular plan with four rooms. The walls of this section consist of 2 x 4's infilled with roughly cut pink rock. Horizontal siding was then hung over the exterior while the interior was finished wi th lath and plaster. 8. Frazer's workbooks frequently refer to Muir's assistance. The stone cross gable wi th its granite trim is unique among all the·· stone rouses in Beaver. David Muir was born in Scotland and inunigrated to Utah as a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He lived first in Cedar City, Utah, before settling permanently (c. 1857) in Beaver. Muir was a stonemason and built his own home, from his own designs. This is the only extant building in Beaver that he built in its entirity and his style of construction is easily distinguished by two characteristics: 1) high-relief mortar joints, and 2) vary nicely cut basalt blocks. Also unique to his home are a stone tower an a vernacular, Eastlake style porch (see description facing page). Although this is probably the only building completely desi@led' ~nd built by David Muir in Beaver, Muir frequently worked for a contractor ·named Thomas Frazer. Frazer was a fellow Scots convert to the L.D.S. · religion and both men learned their masonry skills in Scotland before immigrating to the new world. Frazer built most of the black rock buildings in Beaver and his extant workbooks (mostly from the,1880s) mention David Mlir as his trusted and frequently employed assistant. 9. David Muir was born in Scotland and first lived in Cedar City, Utah. In approximately the year 1857 he moved to Beaver where he worked regularly with Thomas Frazer, another Scotsman who was the contractor for many of the rock buildings in town. David Muir undoubtedly designed his own house and while there are some similarities to Thomas Frazer's style of building, it is apparent upon close examination that Muir had a style all his own. Muir cut the stone blocks even more squarely than Frazer did and his mortar joints were beaded to a higher relief. Also, Muir incorporated a small stone tower in the front facade of his home, a completely unique motif in Beaver and probably all of southern Utah. Not much is known about Muir's personal life in Beaver, but it is recorded that he had a nice voice and that he sang in both the Cedar City choir of the L.D.S. Church and the Beaver Church. David Muir died in 1903 leaving his house to Catherine Muir Vincent. These mortar joints are raised approximately 1/2 inch and are of a uniform width7 approx- . imately 3/4 inch. Only the front facade displays cut stone and beaded mortar . joints, the other three facades consisting of 'stuccoed rubble rock. Also on Beaver) grani te granite the front of the rouse is a very unusual stone cross gable (unique in that terminates in a gable at the top. Tre top is covered with brown coping and the coping rolls into scrolls that form brackets for a sphere. The woodwork on the house includes a vernacular interpretation of an' Eastlake style porch7 the only such example still extant in Beaver. ' The eaves are trimme<I \ri th a plain, )'et substantial, Greek Revival style cornice that fonn boxed returns on the gable ends. Circa 1885 a"one room lean-to was added on to the l'ear of the original two room house. It is built of a local pink rock (tuff) that comes from a quarry in th Beaver River Can)"On. The pink rock quarry was commercially exploited beginni.ng.c • .1~81, . and because it was so much easier to work tron the black basalt, tr..e tuff soon became the exclusive building rock.. Also at this same . time, a .pink rock granary\'fi tha basement was built towards the rear of the property. It is two rooms and its rock is liell cut and liell lared . . Too second addition -to' the house \vas constructed c. 1895 and is situated on the rear, gi vi ng the · rome a rectangular plan wi th four rooms. The' walls of this section consist of 2 x 4 t s infilled with roughly cut pink rock. Horizontal siding was then hung over the exterior while the interior was finished with lath and plaster. Muir was a Scottish convert to the r.1onnon church» and worked frequently with Thomas Frazer. the stone mason responsible for most of the black roCk homes in Beaver. Frazer's norkbooks frequently refer· to Muir's assist~nc:~_. The stone cross gable with its granite trim is unique among all tt~·· stone rouses in Beaver. David Muir was 'born in Scotland and immigrated to Utah as a convert to the . Church of ·Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He lived first in Cedar City. Utah, before settling permanently (c. 1857) in Beaver. ~ruir was a stonemason and built his own rJOme, from his own designs. This is the only extant building in Beaver that he built in its entirity and his style of constructiom is easily distinguished by tliO characteristics; 1) high-relief mortar joints~ and 2) vary nicely cut basalt blocks. .Also unique to his home are a stone tower an a vernacular, Eastlake style porch (see description facing page). Although this is probably the only building completely designed and built by David t·ilir in Beaver, ~ir frequently lwrked for a ~oI?tract?!' :name~. Thomas Frazer. Frazer was a fellow Scots convert to the L.D.S. -religion and both mell learned their masonry skills in Scotland before immigrating to the new ,,,orld. Frazer built most of the black rock buildings in Beaver and his extant workbooks (tlOstly from t~ ..1880s) mention David Nuir as his trusted and . frequently employed assistant. . _...'.' There are four windows and a door symmetrically placed across the front facade and two main rooms on the original part of the interior. The black rock is meticulously squared and the mortar joints are beaded in high relief. The original porch displays elaborate scroll sawn ornament. There is a very unusual cross gable in the center of the facade above the smaller cross gable of the porch. It is edged with a granite coping and the coping rolls into scrolls which hold a granite sphere. On the gable ends the building was probably finished with rubble stone, then plastered over. The plaster is scored to look like cut stone blocks. UTAH 8C 101 TELEPHONE ~ 1 1 ~3J.5755 Dear Mr. and Mrs. Paice: Shortly after completion of t he review meetings and comment deadlines for consideration of the nomination of those buildings in Beaver which appear eligible for listing in the Nation-a1 Register of Historic places, Congress passed ammendments to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. One of the ammendments formalized a procedure that had already been in effect here in Utah--providing the owners of properties under consideration for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, the opportunity to object to the listing. Your property, at 295 North 300 West, has been recommended for nomination. 11 listed ln the National Register of Historic Places there are no restrictions placed on you as a property owner. You are still able to sell, renovate, demol i sh or alter your property just the same as if it were not listed in the National Register. The purpose of the listing is to document and identify those buildings, houses and sites and structures, which help us understand the past history and development of communities, the state, or the nation. There are some tax benefits for rehabilitation work on commercial buildings and one tax penalty if you demolish a listed building. The tax penalty is that you are not able to wr i te off as an allowable expense the demolition costs. If you wish to object to the listing of your property in the National Register you must submit to us a notarized statement that you are the owner of the property and that you object to its listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The notarized letter \'/il1 insure that your property will not be listed in the Register and only a determination of the property's eligibility for the National Register will be made. The notarized statement objecting to the nomination must be submitted before May 1st of this year at which time the nomination will be forwarded to the National Register Office for final action. We would also appreciate any 1etters in support of the nomination of your property. I will be in Beaver on Tuesday ~~rch 16th at the Beaver County Courthouse in the Commision Chambers from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to answer any questions about the nomination and any other questions you may have. The publication is patterned after a book published in 1980, The Avenues of Salt lake City, which has been received with great enthusiasm by residents of the Avenues and others interested in Utah history. The publication on Beaver will include an historical overview, section on Beaver's architectural history, and a photograph and short history of each of the historic buildings in the community. I am enclosing a copy of the structure/site information form which will be used in preparing the history of your property. Please read it and if you have any additional information or corrections please send them to me, or stop by the courthouse on t~a rch 16th. I wi 11 have a copy of the Avenues book with me so that you can see the format for the Beaver publication which we hope to have out the end of this year or early in 1983. Inclusion of your property in the National Register or in the proposed publication does not mean that tourists and visitors have any right to tour your house or trespass on your property. We have not had reports with this being a problem. It is always a pleasure for me to be in Beaver--your community is unique in the state and your efforts at preserving the historical resources of your community will be greatly appreciated by future generations • . Box 165 Beaver, UT 84713 Dear Ms. Strong: RE: David Muir House We are pleased to report that your property has been considered to be eligible for nomination to the National Register. Therefore, if your property is nominated and listed, the provisions of the Tax Reform Act, signed into law on October 4, 1976, will be in effect. Specifically, the act contains four main provisions for buildings that qualify for tax depreciation e.g. income or commercial properties: (1) permits a five-year amortization of certified rehabilitation expenses; (2) eliminates business expense deductions for demolition; (3) eliminates accelerated depreciation for structures built on the site of demolished historic structures; (4) provides special depreciation rules when the cost of rehabilitation exceeds $5,000 and the purchase price of the building. National Register guidelines allow you thirty days in which to comment on the eligibility of said property. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Preservation Office, Utah State Historical Society, 307 West 200 South, Suite 1000, Salt Lake City, Utah 84101, 533-6017. ~~~ J.~i11ip Keene, III Executive Director and State Historic Preservation Officer jjw STATEJIISTORYBOARD: Dr. MiltonC. The National Register is the Federal Government's official list of historic buildings and other cultural resources worthy of preservation. Listing in the National Register makes private property owners eligible to be considered for Federal grants-in-aid for historic preservation and provides limited protection through comment by the Advisory Council en Historic Preservation on the effect of federally financed, assisted, or licensed undertakings on historic properties. If your property is depreciable and is listed in the National Register, there are also certain provisions of the 1976 Tax Reform Act that may apply to you. Section 2124 of the 1976 Tax Reform Act encourages preservation of historic depreciable structures by allowing favorable tax treatments for rehabilitations. In addition, it discourages destruction of historic buildings by reducing tax incentives both for demolition of historic structures and for new construction on the site of demolished historic buildings. If you wish to comment on whether your property should be nominated to the National Register, send your comments before June 6 to the Preservation Office, Utah State Historical Society, 307 West 200 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84101, 533-6017. You are welcome to attend the meeting. Sincerely, A. Kent Powell Preservation Research Coordinator jjw S1''\ TE IIISTORY BOAR 0 : Dr. _"illun C. Abrams, Chairman • Theron II. Luke • Ur. Ted J.
