It was also originally constructed with a black rock (basalt) lean-to. It has a full attic and a partial basement. Outbuildings: one shed-fair condition; one row shed, probably used as horse stalls. No beaded mortar joints. While the house has end-wall chimneys, it is a central hall plan, one of the few in Beaver. The front door displays a transom window and side lights and the windows of the front facade are arranged w'ith bilateral symmetry on either side of a door on the ground floor, and one upstairs. This upstairs door used to lead to a porch that is no longer extant. There are black rock ashlar walls, of good workmanship, on the two facades that face the street while the other two are constructed of rubble stone. 5 6>- G I Statement of Historical Significance: Construction Date: \-lilliam Greenwood was born March 4, 1819 in Hopinstal, England. He immigrated to Acerica when he was 22 years old, and arrived in Salt Lake City in 1852. Shortly thereafter he was called on an L.D.S. Church mission to Cedar City. However, he became dissatisfied in Cedar, and, with his good friend John Ashworth (later Beaver's first mayor), decided to seek a new location further north. The t\VO men and their oldest sons set out tml1ards Fillmore during the winter but were trapped in the mountains north of }Ianderfield by deep snow. Upon back-tracking to a lml1er elevation, they :met another party of men mostly from Parowan. This party was intent on establishing a settlement on the Be aver River and invited Greenwood and Ashworth to settle with them. In about 1878, ~fr. Greenwood built, or had built for him, a large two story house (plus attic and basement). Though the home is . similar to those built by Thomas Frazer, the local stonemason, it was probably built by someone else. Like Frazer's work, the house has black rock ashlar walls and barbegoard along the eaves, but the mortar joints have received no special treatment, the house is two full stories instead of Frazer's usual 1-1/2 and it has a central hall plan, something Frazer appears never to have used in his work, sco :- r ') October 14, 1982 ') A1HES(, N GO VER~O ~ Division of State History (UTAH STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY) STA:EO, UTAH DePARIMENT OF COV ,} / . :TY ,;,,:; tCONOVIC [lEVE:LOP~}~·. Haase 1704 Poplar Ave. Las Vegas, Nevada 89101 Dear Mr. & Mrs. Haase: It is my distinct pleasure to inform you that on September 9, 1982 the William Greenwood House at 190 South 100 West, Beaver, Utah, nominated by the Historic and Cultural Sites Review Committee and the Utah State Historic Preservation Officer, was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service and Ms. Carol Shull, Acting Keeper of the National Register. The National Register of Historic places is the official list of historic properties recognized by the Federal Government as worthy of preservation for their significance in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering and culture. Located in the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, the program is part of a national policy to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our cultural and natural resources, and is maintained by the Secretary of the Interior under provisions of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Listing in the National Register provides the following benefits to historic properties: -Consideration in the planning for federally assisted • projects. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 provides that the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation be given an opportunity to comment on projects affecting such properties. -Eligibility for Federal tax benefits for rehabilitations of certain historic commercial, industrial and residential rental buildings. -Consideration of historic values in the decision to issue a surface coal mining permit where coal is located, in accord with the Surface Mining and Control Act of 1977. Alexander Da'l!d S Monson • Ehzabeth G"IIrth • Wilham D. Owens -Qualification for Federal grants for historic preservation when funds are available. Listing does not mean that the Federal Government wants to acquire the property, place restrictive convenants on the land, or dictate the color or materials used on individual buildings. State and local ordinances or laws establishing restrictive loning, special design review committees, or review of exterior alterations, are not a part of the National Register program and should be clearly separated from the function of the National Register as a tool in the Federal planning process. We would like to send you an 1111 x 1111 parchment certificate with the gold seal of Utah. It contains the name of the site, the nature of its significance, the date of listing, and the signatures of Governor Matheson, Milton Abrams, Chairman of the Historic and Cultural Sites Review Committee, and Melvin T. Smith, Director of the Utah State Historical Society and Utah's State Historic Preservation Officer. There is no charge. If you would like the certificate, please let us know by mail or call 533-6017. Our congratulations on the honor given you and the State of Utah. DIRECTOR . 300 RIO GRANOE Sf<LTLAKE CITY, UTAH 84101 TELEPHONE 8011 53J.5755 Dear Mr. and Mrs. Haase: Shortly after completion of the review meetings and comment deadlines for consideration of the nomination of those buildings in Beaver which appear eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic places, Congress passed ammendments to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. One of the ammendments formalized a procedure that had already been in effect here in Utah--providing the owners of properties under consideration for nomination to the National Register of ' Historic Places, the opportunity to object to the listing. Your property, at 190 South 100 West, Beaver, Utah', has been recommended for nomination. If listed in the National Register of Historic Places there are no restrictions placed on you as a property owner. You are still able to sell, renovate, demolish or alter your-property just the same as if it were not listed in the National Register. The purpose of the listing is to document and identify those buildings, houses and sites and structures, which help us understand the past history and development of communities, the state, or the nation. There are some tax benefits for rehabilitation work on commercial buildings and one tax penalty if you demolish a listed building. The tax penalty is that you are not able to write off as an allowable expense the demolition costs. If you wish to object to the listing of your property in the National Register you must submit to us a notarized statement that you are the owner of the property and that you object to its listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The notarized letter will insure that your property will not be listed in the Register and only a determination of the property IS el i gi bi1 i ty for the Na ti ona 1 Regi s ter will be made. The notarized statement objecting to the nomination must be submitted before May 1st of this year at which time the nomination will be forwarded to the National Register Office for final action. We \'/ou1d also appreciate any letters in support of the nomination of your property. I will be in Beaver on Tuesday March 16th at the Beaver County Courthouse in the Commision Chambers from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to answer any questions about the nomination and any other questions you may have. Owens One final note, the Utah State Historical Society has received funds to publish the study of Beaver compiled by Linda Bonar which led to this nomination of Beaver's historic properties. The publication is patterned after a book published in 1980, The Avenues of Salt Lake City, which has been received with great enthusiasm by residents of the Avenues and others interested in Utah history. The publication on Beaver will include an historical overview, section on Beaver's architectural history. and a photograph and short history of each of the historic buildings in the community. I am enclosing a copy of the structure/site information form which will be used in preparing the history of your property. Please read it and if you have any additional information or corrections please send them to me, or stop by the courthouse on March 16th. I will have a copy of the Avenues book with me so that you can see the format for the Beaver publication which we hope to have out the end of this year or early in 1983. Inclusion of your property in the National Register or in the proposed publication does not mean that tourists and visitors have any right to tour your house or trespass on your property. We have not had reports with this being a problem. It is always a pleasure for me to be in Beaver--your community is unique in the state and your efforts at preserving the historical resources of your community will be greatly appreciated by future generations. Please send any comments to me at the Utah State Historical Society, 300 Rio Grande, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84101, or call me at 533-6017.
