Tilt' rock cottage is especiall.y interesting because it is an example of Frazer's early designs, built b ,,~fore his clients ,,,ere \"ealthy enough to afford the ])2 story hall and parlor homes for which Frazer has become l:::nmm. The rock portion displays ,·,hat this r~searcher calls "Scots" masonr:,·, a type of masonry ti'. at is cOllliTlonly found in parts of Scotland. This consists of course s of large st one blocks that occa s siona lly have stacks of tl-1O or three small stones stacked on top of each other along side of the larger blocks. Besides the stone section, there L ;. an unusual brick structure to the south. This portion of the home has tHO doors on the front facade, interspersed "'ith three ",indotvs,. though they are not placed \vith bilateral synune try like most frOi tt facades in Beaver. The brick p~rtion is l!:l stories tall, and has small vindm·,s to light the upstairs rooms in its gable. There is decorative brickwork under the Greek Revival style cornice, and the porch has Ionic columns as '.Jell as wooden dentals along its cornice; line. Unfortunately, the entire structure has been painted white. . -. '- '-~ -----. Statement of Historical Significance: >- r....: o I· · e" :.C S,c.....,I,..'~~T Construction Date: The ho:ne is ~.tn~Bwtgry to a historic district for seve ral reasons: It has a historic cons truction date and its building materials are important. It i.s .also an excellent c:',mpJc of Frazer's early style of building and it is one of the fe,,, extant . cottagE~ ~ > to di s play. the "Scots" style of masonry. The brick portion of the home is contributory b e c c!.:\ se of its unusual s tyle. The home's five piercings . on the front facade <'md their lac k of bilateral synunetry and its unusual cott<lge design make it: unique in Beaver. , ; #' February 23, 1982 Mrs. Chloe Bishop Beaver, Utah 84713 scon M ~' A THF SO N GOVERN OR Division of State History (UTAH STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY) STATf OF UTAH DEPARTMENT OF COMM 'J NITY AND ECONOMIC DEVElOPME)IT MELVIN T, SMITH. DiRECTOR 300 RIO GRANDE SALT LAKE CITY. UTAH 84101 TELEPHONE 801/533-5755 Dear Mrs. Bishop: Shortly after completion of the rev iew meetings an d comment deadlines for consideration of the nomination of those buildings in Beaver which appear eligible for listing in th e National Regist~r of Historic places, Congress passed ammendments to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. One of the ammendments formalized a procedure that had already been in effect here in Utah--providing the owners of properties under consideration for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, the opportunity to object to the listing . Your property, at 205 North 100 West, has been recommended for nomination. i f liSted in the National Register of Historic Places there are no restrictions placed on you as a property owner. You are still able to sell, renovate, demolish or alter your property just the same as if it were not listed in the National Register. The purpose of the listing is to document and identify those buildings, houses and sites and structures, which hel p us understand the past hi story and development of communities, the state, or the nation. There are some tax benefits for rehabilitation work on commercial buildings and one tax penalty if you demolish a listed building. The tax penalty is that you are not able to write off as an allowabl e expense the demolition costs. If you wish to object to the listing of your property in the National Register you must submit to us a notarized statement that you are the owner of the property and that you object to its listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The notarized 1etter \t/il1 insure that your property will not be listed in the Register and only a determination of the propetty's eligibility for the National Register will be made. The notarized statement objecting to the nomination must be submitted before t-1ay 1st of this, year at which time the nomination will be forwarded to the National Regis ter Office for final action. We would also appreciate any letters in support of t he nomination of your property. I will be ;n Beaver on Tuesday March 16th at the Beaver County Courthouse in the Commis;on Chambers from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p~m. to 9:00 p.m. to answer any questions about the nomination and any other questions you may have. The publication is patterned after a book published in 1980, The Avenues of Salt Lake City, which has been received. with great enthusiasm by residents of the· Avenues and others interested in Utah hi story. The publ ication on Beaver will include an historical overview, section on Beaver IS architectu·ral hi story, and a photograph and short hi story of each of the hi storic buildings in the community. I am enclosing a copy of the structure/site information form which will be used in preparing the history of your property. Please read it and if you have any additional information or corrections please send them to me, or stop by the courthouse on March 16th. I will have a copy of the Avenues book with me so that you can see the format for the Beaver publication \mich we ·hope to have out the end of this year or early in 1983. Inclusion of your property in the National Register or in the proposed publication does not mean that tourists and visitors have any right to tour your house or trespass on your property. We have not had reports with this being a problem. It is always a pleasure for me to bein Beaver-~your community is unique in the state and your efforts at preserving the historical resources of your community will be greatly appreciated by future generations • . Please send any comments to me at the Utah State Historical Society, 300 Rio Grande, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84101, or call me at 533-6017. If you are in Salt lake City please stop by our offices in the Denver and Ri.Q..Grande Railroad Depot loacted at 450 West on 300 South.
