Vlctorlan Cottage/ Victorian Eclectic Description of physical appearance & significant architectural features: (Include additions, alterations, ancillary structures, and landscaping if applicable) This brick home combines bungalow and Victorian elements and is the latest house--built c.1919--to be included in the Beaver r~u1tiple Resourse Nani nati ons. The gabl e end of the house face s the street wi th the front entry in the center. The gables are filled with decorative shingles, in a diamond/teardrop pattern. Also in this front gable is a Palladian type window which lights the the attic space. The tallest of these windows is elaborately decorated with classical pilasters and denta1s. The home rests upon a three foot tall, rubble rock foundation and its plan is irregular, though farily close to a rectangle. The brickwork is quite unusual for Beaver, being of a Flemish bond and joined by beaded, squared mortar joints. These mortar joints are dyed white and were very time consuming to build, but they give the masonry a square, precise appearance. The relieving arches above the windows and doors are built of a different brick, the yellow brick that was imported to Beaver and used in the Beaver Hi gh School. The red bri ck in the house is locally made and burned and the current owner of the house, Mr. Hutchings, actually helped to make the brick long before he bought the house. 5 >ct: o ~ (j) I Statement of Historical Significance: Construction Date: The William Fernly house, built c. 1919 is architectua11y significance as one of the few remaini ng well preserved examples of the Victorian cottage dwelling form in Beaver. Tnese small houses, along with those of the T/L cottage type, represent the typical dwellings of Beaver duri ng the early years of the 20th century. As Beaver's golden years of growth and prosperity were 1arge1y over by 1900, these small Victori an cottage type houses document the last gasps of the once vigorous architectural boan which began after about 1880 and lasted until around the turn-of-the-century. William Burt, had worked as a plasterer in both his native Scotland and in Beaver. The bri ck was made by Adam Patterson, whose family had along hi story of brickmaking in Beaver. The first members of the Patterson family to make brick in Beaver learned their skill sin England and arrived in Beaver in 1856 when it was initially founded (see structure/site form BV-04-22). Adam Patterson continued the family brickmaking skills, and had his kiln located at about 1100 East and 200 North. He burned much of the brick for the early 20th century homes that line 200 ~orth North eastward to the golf course. 1045 E. 200 N. DIRECTOR 300 RIO GRANDE SALT LN<E CITY. UTAH 841 01 TELEPHONE 801 f 533-5755 and Mrs. Hutchings: Shortly after completion of the r eview meetin gs and comment deadlines for consideration of the nomination of t hose buildings in Beaver which appear eligible for listing i n the National Register of Historic places, Congress passed ammendments to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. One of the ammendments formalized a procedure that had already been in effect here in Utah--providing the owners of properties under consideration for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, the opportunity to object to the li sting. Your property, at 1045 East 200 North, has been recommended for nominatjon. It listed 1n the National Register of Historic Places there are no restrictions placed on you as a property owner. You are still able to sell, renovate, demolish or alter your property just the same as if it were not listed in the National Reg;-ster. The purpose of the listing is to document and identify those buildings, houses and sites and structures, which help us understand the past history and development of communities, the state, or the nation. There are some tax benefits for rehabilitation work on commercial buildings and one tax penalty if you demolish a listed building . The tax penalty is that you are not able to write off as an allowable expense the demolition costs. If you wi sh to object to the 1i sti ng of your property in the National Register you must submit to us a notarized statement that you are the owner of the property and that you object to its listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The notarized letter will insure that your proper ty will not be listed in the Register and only a determination of the property's eligibility for the National Register will be made. The notarized statement objecting to the nomination must be submitted before May 1st of this year at which time the nomination will be forwarded to the National Register Office for final action. We would also appreciate any letters iri support of the nomination of your property. I will be in Beaver on Tuesday March 16th at the Beaver County Courthouse in the Commision Chambers from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to anS\'ier any questi ons about the nomi nati on and any other questions you may have. The publication is patterned after a book published in 1980, The Avenues of Salt Lake City, which has been received with great enthusiasm by residents of the Avenues and others interested in Utah history. The publication on Beaver will .include an historical overview, section on Beaver's architectural history, and a photograph and short history of each of the historic buildings in the community. I am enclosing a copy of the structure/site information form which will be used in preparing the history of your property. Please read it and if you have any additional information or corrections please send them to me, or stop by the courthouse on March 16th. I will have a copy of the Avenues book with me so that you can see the format for the Beaver publication which we hope to have out the end of this year or early in 1983. " Inclusion of your property in the National Register or in the proposed publ ication does not mean that tourists and visitors have any right to tour your house or trespass on your property. We have not had reports with this being a problem. It is always a pleasure for me .t o be in Beaver--your community is unique in the state· and your effOrts at preserving the historical resources of your community will be greatly appreciated by future generations.· Please send any comments to me at the Utah State Historical Society, 300 Rio Grande, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84101, or call me at 533-6017. Marshal 1045 East 200 North Beaver, Utah 84713 Dear Mr. & Mrs. Hutchings & Ms. Marshal: It is my distinct pleasure to inform you that on November 30, 1983, the Willden Fernley House, nominated by the Historic and Cultural Sites Review Commi ttee and the Utah State Historic Preservation Officer, was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service and Ms. Carol Shull, Acting Keeper of the National Regi ster. The National Register of Historic places is the official list of historic properties recognized by the Federal Government as worthy of preservation for their significance in American history, architecture, arc}leology, engineering and culture. Located in the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, the program is part of a national policy to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our cultural and natural resources, and is maintained by the Secretary of the Interior under provisions of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Listing in the National Register provides the following benefits to historic properties: -Consideration in the plaruling for federally assisted projects. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 provides that the Advisory COlmcil on Hi storic Preservation be given an opportunity to cOr11lTIent on projects affecting such properties. -Eligibility for Fede ral tax benefits for rehabilitations of ce rtain historic corrunercial, industrial and residential rental huildings . -Consideration of historic values in the decision to issue a surface coal mining permit where coal is located, in acco rd with the Surface Mining and Control Act of 1977. The tallest of these windows is elaborately decorated with classical pilasters and dentals. The home rests upon a three foot tall, ~ubble rock foundation and its plan is irregular, though fairly close to a rectangle. The brickwork is quite unusual for Beaver, being of a Flemish bond and joined by beaded, squared mortar joints. These mortar joints are dyed white and were very time consuming to build, but they give the masonry a square, precise appearance. The reliving arches above the windows and doors are built of a different brick, the yellow brick that was imported to Beaver and used in the Beaver High School. The red brick in the house is locally made and burned and the current owner of the ,house, Mr. Hutchings, actually helped to make the brick long before he bought the house. Statement of Historical Significance: Construction Date: he brick was laid by Bill Burt, whose father Burt, had worked as a plasterer in both his native Scotland and in Beaver. The brick was made by Adam Patterson, whose family had a long history of brickmaking in Beaver. The first members of the Patterson family to make brick in Beaver learned their skills in England and arrived in Beaver in 1856 when it was initially founded (see st~cture/site form BV-04-22). Adam Patterson continued the family brickmaking skills, and had his kiln located at about 1100 East 200 North. He burned much of the brick for the early 20th century homes that line 200 North eastward to the golf course. The home was built <tirca 1919 and considering that fact, its design is rath.er old-fashioned for that period. William Fernley House 1045 East 200 North Glen B. and Evelyn G. Hutchings Marie H. These smal I house~ along with those ot the T/L cottage type, represent the typical dwel li ~ f Beaver during the early years of the 20th century.
