The entire, original duplex is built of adobe brick that was then stuccoed white. The front facade displays bilateral symmetry, but the piercings are not evenly spaced. Altogether there are 16 piercings, being eieht over eight with two doors on the ground floor. There are wooden lintels over the doors and windows and many of the original window panes are still extant. On the corners of the duplex, there are plaster quoins and underneath some of the deteriorated plaster, the adobe bricks are visible. They are laid in a common bond and are approximately 8"x3". There is a Greek Revival style cornice on thehouse and on the gable ends it forms a boxed return. There are no windows in the gables but there is a chimney on each gable end as well as one in the center. On the interior, each duplex was divided into a hall and parlor plan, with a staircase on the rear wall. On the rear of the home is a historic brick extension, with a lean-to built on to that. It was built in 1868 which is a very early date in Beaver for such a large, permanent residence. It is built of adobe brick and is one of the few extant adobe structures in Beaver that has not been covered ,.,ith siding or some material that diminishes its historic architectural integrity. The home is also interesting for its duplex plan. The current owner, who has lived in the home for many years, believes the horne was never a "polygamy house" but instead served as a duplex for Sidney Tanner and his brother. Sidney Tanner was a freighter during the 1850's and 60's. He used his teams to freight goods between Salt Lake City and San Bernardiano, California, and later between various towns in Utah. It is recorded that he used his teams to haul black rock in 1873 when Fort Cameron was built near Beaver, Mr. Tanner served as a town coundilman in 1867 as well as First Councilor in the LDS Church from 1869 to 1873. SMITH, D1RECTOR 300 RIO GRANDE SALT LAK!iCITY, UTAH 84101 TELEPHONE 801/533-5755 Dear Mr. and Mrs. Carter: ' ..... Shortly after compl etion of the review me et i.ngs and comment deadlines for consideration of the nomina tj on of those build:ings in Beaver which appear eligible for H sting in the National Register of Historic places, Congress passed ammendments to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. One of the arnmendments formalized a procedure that had already been in effect here in Utah--providing the owners of properties under consideration for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, the opportunity to object to the listing. Your property, 195 [as t 200 North, has been rec'ommended for nomination'. If listed i n the National Register of Historic Places there are no restrictions placed on you as a property owner. You are still able to sell, renovate, demolish or alter your property just the same as if it were not listed in the National Register. The purpose of the listing is to document and i denti fy those bu il di ngs, houses and sites and structures, which help us understand the past history and development of communities, the state, or the nation. There are some tax benefits for rehabilitation \'1ork on commercial buildings and one tax penalty if you demolish a listed building. The tax penalty is that you are not able to write off as an allowable expense the demolition costs. If you wish to object to the listin g of your property i n the National Register you must submit to us a notarized statement that you are the owner of the property and that you object to its listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The notarized letter will insure that your property will not be listed in the Register and only a determination of the property1s eligibility for the National Register will be made. The notarized statement .objecting to the nomination must be submitted before May 1st of this year at wh'ich time the nomination will be forwarded to the National Register Office for final action. We would also appreCiate any l etters in support of the nomination of your property. I will be 'in Beaver on Tuesday March 16th at the Beaver County Courthouse in the Commision Chambers from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to answer any questions about the nomination and any other questions you may have. Owens One final note, the Utah State Historical Society has received funds to publish the study of Beaver compiled by Linda Bonar which led to this nomination of Beaver's historic properties. The publication is patterned after a book published in 1980, The Avenues of Salt Lake City, which has been received with great enthusiasm by residents of the Avenues and others ; nteres ted ; n Utah history. The pub 1i ca ti on on Beaver will; nclude an historical overview, section on Beaver's architectural history, and a photograph and short history of each of the historic buildings in the community. I am enclosing a copy of the structure/site information form which will be used in preparing the history of your property. Please read it and if you have any additional information or corrections please send them to me, or stop by the courthouse on March 16th. I will have a copy of the Avenues book with me so that you can see the format · for the Beaver publ ication which we hope to have out the end of . this year or early in 1983. Inclusion of your property in the National Register or in the proposed publication does not mean that tourists and visitors have any right to tour your house or trespass on your property. We have not had reports with this being a probl em. It is always a pl easure for me to be in Beaver--your community is unique in the state and your efforts at preserving the historical resources of your community will be greatly appreciated by future generations . . Please send any comments to meat the Utah State Historical Society, 300 Rio Grande, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84101, or call me at 533-6017.
