Bonar Researcher: Linda L. Bonar Date: 10/4/78 Street Address: 4 :r: u a: '-': 1867 Architect/ Bui Ider: Alma and Jonathan Crosby Building Materials: wood siding over adobe brick and mud concrete LU n: 115 E 1st North Building Type/Style: Site No: ----------------------------- Description of physical appearance & significant architectural features: (Include additions, alterations, ancillary structures, and landscaping if applicable) The home was originally built as a "T" plan house, the entire structure being l~ stories tall. On the front facade there is a central door and a window located symmetrically on either side of it. Upstairs, there is a cross gable on the front facade that continues right on through the house to form the gable of the rear extension "T" plan. There is a door in the cross gable that leads out to a front porch. The original porch is still extant and displays lathe-turned fancy work and its old flooring. There are end-wall chimneys and small windows upstairs on the gable end. The only exterior alteration on the house has been the addition of a bathroom on the northeast corner which is not visible from the street. 5 >- c:c o ~ ii) :r: Statement of Historical Significance: Construction Date: The home is significant because of its early date (for Beaver), its nearly unaltered appearance and its construction materials. The home was built by Jonathan Crosby and his son Alma, as Alma's residence. The walls are made of mud concrete and adobe brick and it was an early permanent residence by Beaver standards, being built in 1867. Alma Crosby's daughter Mae (she is 99 years old this year) reports that Alma was a farmer and did not have very much time to work on his home, so his father Jonathan helped him a great deal. Jonathan was a carpenter, who made furniture, but he was also able to make the adobe bricks that went into the house. The diaries of Jonathan and his wife Caroline are on microfilm at the office building of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-clay Saints' headquarters in Salt Lake City. The National Register of Historic places is the official list of historic properties recognized by the Federal Government as worthy of preservation for their significance in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering and culture. Located in the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, the program is part of a national policy to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our cultural and natural resources, and is maintained by the Secretary of the Interior under provisions of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Listing in the National Register provides the following benefits to historic properties: -Consideration in the planning for federally . assisted projects. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 provides that the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation be give~ an opportunity to comment on projects affecting such properties. -Eligibility for Federal tax benefits for rehabilitations of certain historic commercial, industrial and residential rental buildings. -Consideratiorr of historic values in the decision to iSSUe a surface coal mining permit "'there coal is located, in accord with the Surface Mining and Control Ac'tc of 1977. -Qualification for Federal grants for historic preservation when funds are available. Listing does not mean that the Federal Government wants to acquire the property, place restrictive convenants on the land, or dictate the color or materials used on individual buildings. State and local ordinances or laws establishing restrictive zoning, special design review committees~ or review of exterior alterations~ are not a part of the National Register program and should be clearly separated from the function of the National Register as a tool in the Federal planning process. We would like to send you an 11" x 11" parchment certificate with the gold seal of Utah. It contains the nalle of the site,. the nature of its significance, the date of listing, and the signatures of Governor Matheson, Milton Abrams, Chairman of the Historic and Cultural Sites Review Committee, and Melvin T. Smith, Director of the Utah State Historical Society and Utah's State Historic Preservation Officer. There is no charge. If you would like the certificate, please let us know by mail or call 533-6017. We do suggest that a marker be placed to give your historic property recognition. Our office has information available regarding a proposed marker text and cost and ordering if ycu wish to purchase a National Register marker. !n t'( j1 -l\Ltt,rra~~Uj \ Sincerely, ~ lJ A.
