Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary: The building at approximately 468 South Main Street is a two-part commercial block structure with minor elements of Beaux Arts design in the use of decorative columns en framing the upper story windows of the fac;:ade and in the inclusion of decorative sculpture applied to the walls, also of the upper story. The foundation of the structure is not clearly visible, so no determination of its construction can be made. The walls of the building appear to be a combination of cinder block and regular brick. The walls of lower story of the building are covered with cement mud and the upper story walls are exposed concrete block. A chimney constructed of regular brick extends from the southwest corner of the building. The lower story of the eastern fac;:ade of the building is composed of a large three-over-three plate glass window and two entryways, one on the north end and one on the south end of the wall. Transom window are present over each doorway. However, the one over the southern door has been filled in with louvers. The upper story ofthe fac;:ade contains three evenly spaced aluminum frame double-hung windows. Adjacent to the two outer windows, the walls of the fac;:ade have what appear to be molded relief applique in a scalloped or shell-like form. The front of the building has been either plastered or covered with cement mud and then white-washed, making visibility of stylistic and architectural detail difficult. Two near-full height en framing pilasters covered with probable rock-faced ashlar are present at either end (north and south) of the front (eastern) fac;:ade. The lower half of the south wall is almost entirely blocked by the adjoining bUilding. The upper portion of the wall, comprising the second story, is constructed of concrete block and contains nine evenly spaced aluminum frame double-hung windows. The lower story ofthe west wall is, as mentioned previously, covered with cement mud, making identification of the underlying materials difficult. The lower story contains one rectangular window opening and a double-wide freight entrance. The window has been boarded up, but the freight entrance appears to remain in use, being enclosed with two wood batten doors. The upper story of the west wall is composed of exposed buffcolored concrete block. Two window openings and one door opening are present in this portion of the wall. The southernmost window opening contains the remains of an aluminum frame double-hung window, while the northern opening contains the remains of what appears to be a woodenframe one-over-one casement window. No door is present in the single doorway, located in the center of the upper story of the wall. The remains (footings) of a wooden balcony are present below the doorway. No information can be provided for the exterior appearance of the northern wall, as it is completely obscured by the adjoining building. The roof appears to have been generally flat, but may have sloped slightly to the west. At present, the roof has collapsed into the upper story of the structure. Historical photographs contained in Milford The First 100 Years (Thompson 1973 :4) and in the recent county history (Bradley 1999:278) indicate some of the construction/architectural changes that have taken place with this building. The undated photograph from the county history shows the building on the location as a single story brick structure know as "The Pat" (Bradley 1999:278) (Figure 1). The window arrangement of the of the building appears to match well with that of the first floor of the current building. The second photograph, a birdseye view of Milford assumed to have been taken around 1913, shows the building at roughly 468 South Main Street as a two-story structure with an upper story window arrangement identical to that at present (Thompson 1973:4) (Figure 2). No specific details of the structure, including the composition of the first story of the fac;:ade, can be seen in the photograph. Presumably, the first photograph (Figure 1) was taken prior to the first photograph, indicating that by ca. 1913, a second story had been added to the building. Physical evidence in the walls of the current structure, including the fact that the lower portions of the walls are covered with cement mud while the upper portions are exposed concrete block, lend support to the notion that a second story was added to an existing structure rather than that the old building was razed and a new, two-story structure was erected in its place. According to the Beaver County tax assessment card. the building at 468 South Main Street was constructed ca. 1911 as a two-story structure. An undated photograph presumed to date prior to 1913 shows the building at the same location to be a single-story structure housing a retail establishment known as "The Pat." A 1913 photograph of Main Street also shows the building. now as a two-story structure. but the nature of the building and its occupant cannot be derived from the photo. The 1917 Sanborn Map Company fire insurance map for Milford indicates that the building at 468 South Main Street was a two-story building with a (poured) concrete first story and a concrete block second story. The building housed a billiards facility and a restaurant at that time. A second set of Sanborn maps for Milford (presumed to be a ca. 1922 revision of the 1917 maps) illustrates the same construction for the building. but the occupant is not clearly identified. 474 So. ~ Milford businesses with The Milford Hotel on the left offering a European Plan for its guests.
