Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary: The building at 464 South Main Street is a two-part commercial block structure with an eclectic array of stylistic elements. The foundation of the structure is not clearly visible, so no determination of its construction can be made. The walls of the building appear to be composed of regular brick with poured concrete used for decorative elements. The lower story of the eastern fa~ade of the building is composed of plate glass windows and two entry ways, one on the north end and one on the south end of the wall. Transom window are present over each doorway. The northernmost doorway is recessed, while the southernmost doorway is flush with the fa~ade. The windows and doorways are all aluminum frame. A horizontal band of large tiles is located just above the doors and windows. This band is interrupted by molded concrete false capitals intended to give the illusion of columns formed out of narrow portions of the wall. Just above this band, molded concrete rectangles and squares have been applied to the walls as decorative elements. The upper story of the fa~ade contains four evenly spaced aluminum frame double-hung windows bordered by false quoins and thick horizontal lintels. A molded concrete curb or false sill has been applied to the wall beneath the windows. The window treatment is composed of poured concrete. Roughly two feet above the upper story windows is a false projecting cornice composed of molded concrete and giving the illusion of brackets or dentils. The front wall of the building is capped by an arched parapet bearing the words "IOOF 1922." Examination of historic photographs suggests that the fa~ade of this building has undergone substantial change over the years. An undated photograph found in The History ofBeaver County (Bradley 1999:278) provides a detailed look at the building's earlier form (Figure 1, attached). In this photograph, none of the molded concrete applique are present. Further, the area where the large band of tiles now exists is composed of a string of fixed sash windows. The upper story windows are framed as a block and the parapet is small and pitched, more in line with a Greek Revival style. The composition of the walls is unclear from the photograph, though it appears that the brick walls have been covered with wooden siding. A second photograph, taken ca. 1913 and contained in Milford The Firt /00 Years (Thompson 1973:4) provides a partial glimpse of the upper story of the building (Figure 2, attached). Although the photograph is fairly poor quality, it is clear that the detail around the windows, the various molded concrete applique, and the arched parapet were not present at that time. The changes occurred to the building's fa~ade very likely took place around 1922, when the IOOF appears to have taken over the upper story of the structure. The south wall of the building is almost entirely obscured by the adjoining building. As such, no description is provided here. The west (rear) wall of the building has undergone substantial alteration. A large, cinder block shed roof addition, with a stepped parapet, has been constructed off of the lower story of the west wall. This addition has a concrete foundation and two doorways. An apparent coal chute is also present at the southern end of the wall, though it is located quite high off of the ground for that purpose. The visible portion of the upper story of the main building's west wall contains two window openings and one doorway . The original opening of the northernmost window, which was large, roughly square, and had a thick concrete lintel, has been partially enclosed with wood siding and a smaller, aluminum frame fixed sash window has been installed. The southernmost window, which was rectangular in shape and also had a thick concrete lintel, has also been partially enclosed and a swamp cooler has been installed. The doorway, located south ofthe southernmost window has been partially enclosed with wood siding. A solid slab door appears to be in place in the remaining portion of the door jamb. The only other distinguishing element of the rear wall is the presence of a brick chimney extending from the southwest corner. The north wall of the building is partially obscured by the presence of an adjoining structure. However, the visible portion of the lower story of the wall contains three rectangular shaped window openings. Two of the openings contain aluminum frame double-hung windows which and have been enclosed with metal security bars. The third window opening houses a swamp cooler in its lower portion. The upper portion has been enclosed with security bars. The upper story of the north wall contains ten window openings. Six of the openings appear identical in size. Four of these openings have been entirely enclosed with wood siding. Two other openings have been partially enclosed with wood siding and small aluminum frame double-hung windows have been installed. The four remaining windows of the north wall are smaller in size and are located near the eastern end of the structure. These windows have an almost random placement in the wall. The windows within the openings appear to be aluminum frame double-hung windows. The roof appears to have been generally flat, but may have sloped slightly to the west. A stepped parapet is present on both the north and south edges of the roof. 5 HISTORY Date of Construction: ca. 1911 Architect/Builder: Unknown Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with "S" or "c" (S =Significant; C =Contributing). Although a building is shown on the location of the current structure at 464 South Main Street in a ca. 1913 photograph, the Beaver County assessment card indicates that the structure was not built until 1922. A building is illustrated on a 1917 Sanborn Map Company fire insurance map for Milford. The building on-site is indicated as a two-story structure measuring only about 58 feet long and composed of a (poured) concrete first story and a concrete block second story. It is noted as housing billiards and a barber. A second set of Sanborn maps for Milford (presumed to be a ca 1922 revision of the 1917 maps) indicates that the building and its lot measure roughly 115 feet long and that the first story is still composed on (poured) concrete but that part of the second story is concrete block and part is brick. This map also indicates that the first story houses a dwelling and something identified as "Clo." The second story is noted as housing a "Lodge Hall." tax 47450. ~ Milford businesses with The Milford Hotel on the left offering a European Plan for its guests.
