SMITH. DIRECTOR 300 RIO GRANOE SALT LAKE CITY. UTAH 84101-1182 TELEPHONE 8011533-5755 Dear Mrs. Whittaker: Kent Powell asked me to follow up on your request to have the Arvin M. Stoddard House in Milford nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. Our staff has reviewed the information which you sent~ and we feel that the house is probably eligible for the National Register because of its association with Arvin Stoddard, founder and first mayor of Milford. We do have some reservations on its eligibility, however. Alterations appear to have been made on the exterior of the house, the most noticeable of which is the composition(?) siding on the walls. The original wall material (was it brick or frame?) has not only been covered over but has perhaps been damaged as well. The other additions and alterations on the house that were visible in the photographs, though detracting from the historical appearance of the house, do not appear to be as serious. Another requirement which must be met is that the current owner must approve of the nomination. However, even if the owner objects to the house being listed on the National Register, the nomination may be submitted and may be "determined eligible" for the register, even though it may not be officially listed. Are the current owners aware and supportive of their house being listed on the National Register? We also have a few questions on the history of the house and Arvin Stoddard. Is this the only remaining house in town that was associated with Mr. Stoddard? Has his original house been torn down? Do you know anything about the construction of the house - its builder or architect, where the materials came from, etc.? These are questions which the National Register Office usually requires to be answered on the nomination form. In summary, we feel that the Arvin M. Stoddard House is probably eligible for the National Register, although we would like to have a little more information on the house and Mr. Stoddard (as exp1ained above) before we complete the nomination. Thank you for your efforts up to this point, and please feel free to contact our office if you have any questions (533-6017). Sincerely, Roger V.
