OUl't, . the .reet. ril 1, TO COURAGE 243 his brother, Jake, built a store there, and Jake lived in a small house east of the store. . 'Vhen the bank bought the corner from his father, the store was moved into the street for a while, and his father tore away all his buildings and erected the large home which was demolished in 1946. On the property across the street stood the Tanner Barn, which later burned, and a feed yard in connection with the barn. Eb Tanner purchased all the ~Iain Street property from his father, anti later sold the property on the east side of Main Street to Henry Jefferson, father of George Jefferson. Henry Jefferson also bought Jake's store, and the family lived for a time in the small house east of the store, which Jake and his family had occupied. Mr. Tanner sold the Tanner home to Jessie Robinson. Mr. Tanner remembers when there was a small printing 'officeon the corner where the Telephone Building now stands, and just north of it was A. M. Stoddard's hay yard, cow corral and barn. David Tanner, another son of Ebenezer Tanner Sr., is the oldest continuous resident of Milford today. Charles Jameson says he can recall when "Milford was a frog pond with five saloons surrounding it." When he was a small boy, he said, he saw four spans of horses with loads of ore, stalled in the mud on ~1ilford 's 1Iain Street just in front of the present Milford State Bank. WILLIAMS HOTEL-FIRST IN MILFORD ~e 011 ands. op, a If the ~rlier 'ound rhero .. atar, The first hotel in Milford was built in 1881 by John D. 'Villiams and a Mr. Latey. It was built to accommodate the workers at the smelter. Mrs. Evans, a daughter of John D. 'Villiams, said that in the early days many noted and interesting people stopped with them. Of the many distinguished guests and travelers, she well remembers Bishop Scanlon of the Catholic Church. and the noted Captain DeLaMar. 244 MONUMENTS ~ : The large, dining room of the Williams Hotel was often the scene of merry dancing parties. The Smithson Hotel on Main Street (now the Peterson house), was at one time the largest hotel in the business district, and eventually had a greater business than any other hotel in town. At one time there were 40 steady boarders, besides the transient trade. Arvin Stoddard also ran a hotel at his home. The :Milford and Atkin (now Horn Silver) hotels were built later. MILFORD'S FAMED TANNER HOUSE WAS KNOWN OVER ENTIRE WEST The Tanner House, built in 1894 as a residence for ~rr. and Mrs. Ebenezer Tanner Sr., and their 11 children, and later serving Milford as a rooming house, frontier hotel, stagecoach station, L. D. S. meeting house, and apartment house, was an early-day landmark. Built of Oregon pine and California redwood by Dave Gangle, contractor, there were no blueprints or drawings for the structure. It was built from 11r. Tanner's ideas as each stage of the construction was reached, with Mr. 'Tanner" telling them what he wanted and they built it." David Tanner, Ebenezer Jr., Jacob T. and James E., all helped with the construction, from digging trenches for the foundation to nailing on the shingles. Total construction cost was approximately $3,000. The original house consisted of six rooms, all on the ground floor. The upstairs, unfinished and , not partitioned into rooms, was used as a dance hall and meeting house. Later, six rooms were added on the second story, and kerosene lamps were replaced with carbide li ~hts. Early in the century, electric lights were installed. Two of the fixtures, a "cherub" chandelier in the living room and a "rosette" chandelier in the lower hall\\-ay, were beautiful masterpieces and were preserved by the owners when the ancient edifice was demolished. ..
