LAND OWNER: Bureau of Land Management (LM) FEDERAL ADMIN. UNITS: Vernal Field Office (B8) LOCATION OF CURATED MATERIALS: SITE DESCRIPTION: This site is a large historic sheep camp and corral complex consisting of eleven features. The site was originally constructed in the 1930s by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Division of Grazing. There is no longer any indication of the original 1930s construction. On-going maintenance and repairs has probably replaced the older features, leaving the oldest known feature dating to 1949. Feature-A is a one-hole ·privy measuring 4 ft E-W by 5 ft N-S. The frame is constructed using 2 by 4s, with corrugated sheet metal (galvanized steel) covering the walls and shed style roof. The walls rest on a plank base, and there is no door. Metal hinges are still attached to the door frame. There is a plywood seat. Feature-B is a loading ramp used for loading and off-loading equipment to and from trucks and trailers. It is constructed of rough-cut 3 inch by 12 inch planks and 8 inch D posts, and measures 21 ft by 18 ft. It is about 3 ft tall at the north end and tapers off toward the south . It is filled with sediment similar to the surrounding soil. It looks fairly new and is likely out of period. Feature-C is a rectangular framed corrugated sheet metal (galvanized steel) covered building. It measures 39 ft by 12 ft, and has a 9 ft tall ceiling . The roof is gabled at the north and south ends. The west wall has a door in the center, and is flanked by a window on either side. There is a gas regulator for propane tanks on the west wall. A buried power line enters the north wall approximately 1 ft above IMACS SITE FORM: 42Un5540 Part A (Continued) the ground. The east wall has electrical outlets. It also has a 9 ft by 12 ft framed addition with a shed roof that is used for storage. The addition has a door on each side. The south wall has one window in the center. Gutters from the east and west roof edges flow into a square concrete box at the bottom center of the wall. Just south of the concrete box is an 8 ft by 8 ft square concrete slab that is the cover for an underground cistern. A raised concrete box opening to the cistern is located in its NW corner and is covered by a hinged steel plate lid. The concrete slab has a date of Dec. 1, 1949. There are three chimneys on the roof, one on either end of the main roof, and one on the attached storage room. Feature-D consists of two grain silos on a raised wood platform. The galvanized steel silos are 10ft tall and 9 inches in diameter. The cone shaped roofs are constructed of galvanized steel that is bolted together. Each silo has a rectangular door. The silos sit on a raised plank and post platform that is covered with galvanized steel sheet metal that is nailed to it, probably to keep out rodents. The rectangular platform measures 12 ft by 27 ft and stands 2' tall. There is a satellite dish (TV) on a pine post adjacent to the south side of the platform. Feature-E is a rectangular framed corrugated sheet metal (galvanized steel) covered building with a shed roof. It measures 10ft by 21 ft and stands 10ft tall. There is a window on the east wall. A framed commercial wood door with a window in it, and a sheet metal awning over it, is on the west wall. A storage box is also attached to the west wall. Two small sheds are located along the east wall. Feature-F is a small rectangular framed corrugated sheet metal (galvanized steel) covered building with a shed roof. It has no windows, and a home-made wood door mounted on post skids on the west wall. A corrugated sheet metal door is mounted on the east wall. A small 5 ft by 5 ft storage shed is located along the north wall. Feature-G is a one-hole privy measuring 4 ft 6 inches by 4 ft 6 inches wide by 8 ft tall. The frame building is constructed using 2 by 4s and tan painted sheet metal covers the walls. The walls rest on a wood frame base, and there is a plywood door. It has a shed style roof covered by corrugated sheet metal. Feature-H is a sheep corral with rectangular pens. It measures 21 ft by 75 ft and is 4 ft tall; it is constructed using treated pine posts and wood plank sides. The posts look new (still green from being treated) and are out of period, but the planks look reused. There are four 10ft by 10ft lambing pens along the east side of the corral, and two holding areas that are separated by a gate in the middle of the corral. There are gates on the north and south ends of the corral. Feature-I is a covered open sun-shade for sheep. It is constructed using 4 ft tall posts with horizontal poles nailed and wired along the top, and scraps of corrugated sheet metal as a roof. It measures 132 ft E-W by 20 ft N-S. The south side is up against the face of a long sandstone cliff. There is a pile of scrap materials and trash at the east end of the sun-shade. It consists of plumbing parts, scraps of corrugated sheet metal, rolls of wire, wood posts and some cans. Feature-J is a rectangular horse corral. It is constructed from 5 ft tall treated pine posts and reused 1 inch by 12 inch boards that are nailed to the posts. There are no boards for the first 18 inches of the walls of the corral. The corral measures 48 ft NW-SE by 27 ft SW-NE. The sandstone cliff forms the SW wall of the corral. There are 10ft wide gates at the NW and SE ends of the corral. A nylon horse lead rope with chrome snaps is looped around a post. Feature-K is a large roughly rectangular sheep corral that measures 574 ft by 262 ft. The original corral has been added onto in a non symmetrical manner. There are a number of gates and narrow chutes within the corral, as well as large holding pens and small covered lambing pens. The chutes and gates allow for the movement of sheep between different areas within the corral. There are several large paddocks between the corral and the cliff that forms the west side of the Bitter Creek Canyon. - The corral is constructed of treated posts and various sections of boards and welded wire mesh panels. The corral is in great functional shape, and is regularly maintained . It is still used seasonally. There is a 5 m by 5 m can dump that is not in period and may not be associated with the corral site, that is located 5 m west of the fence. Feature-L is a 8 ft by 8 ft square concrete slab that is the cover for a underground cistern. It is located just south of Feature C. A raised concrete box opening to the cistern is located in its NW corner and is covered by a hinged steel plate lid. The concrete slab has a date of Dec. 1, 1949.
