Description An irreversible lesion of the optic nerve causes structural changes in the macular area of the retina and occasionally edema in the inner nuclear layer. The latter is termed microcystic macular edema (MME)(1), while the whole of macular changes in optic neuropathy may be named retrograde maculopathy (RMP)(2). In this presentation I show the temporal relation between lesion onset and appearance of RMP, novel anatomical characteristics, a therapeutic option, risk factors and non-risk factors for this entity in a broad spectrum optic neuropathies.
