Description Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) provides high axial resolution cross sectional images of the retina and has been widely adopted by ophthalmologists to diagnose and monitor diseases such as glaucoma. Advances in OCT, such as OCT-angiography have allowed for visualization of retinal microvasculature and better understanding of certain ophthalmic disease pathologies. While these developments are insightful, management and understanding of other disease states would benefit from further mechanistic elucidations. OCT in clinical settings uses near infrared (NIR) light to produce images, but with advances in imaging speed, OCT based on visible light (vis-OCT) has become viable. Based on inherent biological tissue contrast and axial resolution being greater with visible light, neuro-ophthalmic information can be gathered with the technique, such as, in the form of en face visualization of individual retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon bundle networks, referred to as vis-OCT-fibergraphy. While this visualization had previously been performed in mice, prior to this study, translation to the neuro-ophthalmology clinic had not been document.
