Reconnaissance Survey data from 1987 and 1992 show that the Parley P. & Malissa Hansen House is one of 25 buildings of the Victorian Eclectic style, Central Block with Projecting Bays form house in American Fork. The house exhibits many common elements found on other houses of this type and style in American Fork, including fued brick construction with decorative brick exterior details, often executed in a contrasting color of brick. In this house, many of the door and window openings are capped by decorative buff- colored brick hoods, segmental in shape. The building rests on a rock-faced coarsed sandstone foundation, and is topped with an asphalt shingled hipped roof. The house has been altered considerably in the past decades. These alterations include renovations to convert the house into a duplex. Local sources have suggested that the house has always been a multiple family dwelling. This may indeed be the case, though the presence of more than one main entrance on a building was a common feature of Victorian houses. Further examination of the interior as part of research beyond the scope of this survey would probably answer this question. Recent changes, although similarly extensive, have been done with a sensitivity toward the character of the building. The roof of the central block of the house was recently expanded and re-sloped, presumably to provide extra space in the upper story. The ends of each gable have been shingled with patterned wood shingles, and the porches over each entrance have been rebuilt. Sanborn Maps from 1890, 1908, and 1938 show that the house immediately west of the Hansen House, on 100 West, was once an outbuilding on this property. No other outbuildings appear on the maps. Today, the former outbuilding has been converted into a residence and the property it sits on is now a separate parcel. A wood frame storage shed of recent vintage is the only current outbuilding on the lot. 5 Architect/Builder: unknown Date of Construction: c. Duncan, one of American Fork's early residents, built a three room wood frame house on the lot, along with a 1Yz story granary west of the house. The granary has survived and is now a residence, but has long since been sold as a separate parcel of property. Duncan's house was demolished sometime after 1890 to make room for a new residence built by the property's new owner, Parley P. Hansen. John Duncan moved to Heber City, where he died in 1910. Hansen, a native of Denmark, arrived in Salt Lake City in 1850, before he was a year old. With his family, he was one of the fust settlers of Spring City, in Sanpete County. In 1862, he moved to Bingham and worked in the mines there until 1883, when he settled in American Fork. In American Fork, Parley became a stockman. He married Malissa Ann Boley, an American Fork native, on Christmas Day, 1884. In 1890, the Hansens bought this property. Although the exact date of construction of the house is not known, presumably it was built soon after the Hansens bought the lot. The new house, in basically its current footprint, appears on the 1908 Sanborn Map. In 1913, Malissa Hansen died, leaving Parley and their family of three sons and two daughters. Two years later, Parley married Ethel Crompton. They remained in the house until Parley's death in 1935. The Hansen's sons, Mahlin S. Hansen, and DeMont Hansen, were willed the house. Some confusion exists here: L.D.S. genealogy records indicate that DeMont Hansen died in 1914 at the age of22. They owned it until 1946, when Lila O. Hansen assumed sole ownership of the property. Lila O. Hansen is listed in land records in 1944 as Mahlin Hansen's legal guardian. In 1952, she sold the property to Dee R. & Virginia H. Hunter. They owned the house until 1993.
