The Chadwick house is one of approximately 95 bungalows in American Fork, as identified by 1987 and 1992 Reconnaissance Survey data. This house type and style was one ofthe most popular in Utah from c.1905-c.l925. This appears to have been also true in American Fork, where the Recon. Surveys observed it to be second only to the Crosswing type in surviving examples. This house is one of only a few bungalows in American Fork that incorporated elements of the Prairie Style in its design. The Prairie Style was developed by noted American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his followers to be a uniquely American style that echoed the wide, flat landscape ofthe American Prairie. The Chadwick house exhibits such Prairie hallmarks as deep overhanging eaves, a low hipped roof and bands of pebble finished concrete coping. All of these elements give the building a feeling of horizontality that distinguished Prairie style bungalows from other more commonly found bungalow style houses. Although maintaining a high level of overall integrity, several additions and alterations have been made to the house over the years. These include an enclosed front porch (c.1951), aluminum framed storm sashes in the basement windows (c.1970) and an aluminum soffit along the roof eaves (c.1990). Sanborn Maps from 1938 (the only edition of the Sanborns on which the house appears) show no associated outbuildings. Today, most of the backyard has been paved for parking, and there are still no associated outbuildings. Explain and justify any significant themes marked above. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Chadwick House was built c.1922 for John Ernest Chadwick and his wife, Cora Jane Barratt Chadwick. It stands on land first owned by William Kelly . In 1875, Kelly sold the lot to John McNeill McNeill and his wife, Eliza, built the a small brick cottage on the south end of the lot (now the site ofthe present 55 S. Center St.). John McNeill died in 1918; Eliza McNeill was willed the property. In 1922, she sold the north half of the lot to J.E. Chadwick, who presumably built his house on the lot soon after. John E. Chadwick (1883-1939) was a native of American Fork, and, according to his obituary, lived there all his life. In 1906, he married Cora Jane Barratt. In the course of their marriage, the couple had two sons. John began his career as a clerk at Chipman Mercantile, on Main Street. In 1917, he went to work for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York; he remained an insurance agent until his death in 1939. He also performed many civic and church duties, including a term as a member of the city council (1919-1921). He also was president of the American Fork Library Board, and was president of the Y.M.M.I.A. in the American Fork LOS First Ward. Most notably, Chadwick served as American Fork's Postmaster from 1922 until 1934. After John Chadwick's death in 1939, Cora Chadwick remained in the house. She deeded the property to her son, Wayne Chadwick, in 1949, but lived at 45 S. Center St. until her death in 1958. The house remained in the hands of the Chadwick family until 1973, when it was purchased by Evan L. & Elaine Mitchell.
