Reconnaissance Survey data from 1987 and 1992 show that the Crystal-Anderson House is one of25 buildings of the Victorian Eclectic style, Central Block with Projecting Bays form house in American Fork. Standout features of the building include a blue limestone foundation (a common building material of the period in northern Utah County), classical details on the porch and along the roof eaves, and a wood shingle roof. The house retains its integrity, especially when viewed from the street. A sizable one story rear kitchen addition was added sometime after the historic period. This addition, though it expanded the house by about 113, is unobtrusive in its placement and massing and takes its stylistic clues from the original building. Very few alterations have otherwise been made, with the exception of some well thought out maintenance minded alterations. These include recent roof work, repointed chimney stacks, and a few removable aluminum storm windows. None of these changes detract from the integrity of the building. Sanborn Maps show that a small wood frame shed was once located at the northeast comer of the lot. This building appears to have been demolished, though that portion ofthe property is now visually blocked by another, out of period garage/greenhouse immediately west of the location ofthe historic outbuilding. The Crystal-Anderson House is locally significant as one of American Fork's best remaining examples of the Victorian Eclectic style, Central Block with Projecting Bays form house. This housing type was one of the most common in Utah (including American Fork) in the late 19th Century. Its popularity was due to economic stability that the arrival of the railroad brought to communities such as American Fork, and the resulting awareness of nationally popular Victorian building styles and types. The house was constructed on land patented by James Crystal in 1870, at the time of the formal establishment of property records in American Fork. James Crystal's son, James Smith Crystal, appears to have built this house around the time of his marriage to Laura Zeufelt in 1904. The property remained in the hands of the senior James Crystal until 1910, however. From 1910 until 1914 the building was owned by James S. Crystal, after which ownership passed back to James Crystal. In 1919, James Crystal sold the property to Harold A. Craven, who sold it to William A Hollein a year later. Neither Craven nor Hollein appear in Polk City Directories for American Fork in the years around their time of ownership. Thus, it appears that the property was occupied by someone other than these owners. A similar lack of information was found for the building's next owner, Dorothy C. Nichols, who owned the property from 1920-21. In 1921 James Chipman Jr. bought the house. He owned several properties along the 100 block of West Main Street. Chipman sold the house in 1924 to Gus A. and Virgie Anderson. According to Polk Directories, Gus was the owner of the Saddlery Company. The couple lived in the house until Gus' death in 1935. Virgie then assumed full ownership and continued to live there until 1987, when she sold the house to Gordon and Kathryn Hall. ( over) The 1891 issue of Polks Directory lists James, Jr. as a clerk in the Chipman Mercantile Co.; In the 1915-16 issue of Polk's he is listed as being the Vice-President of the Chipman Mercantile Co., and also of the Bank of American Fork; He is listed as holding these same positions in the 1917-18, 1920, and 1922 issues. In the 1924 issue he is listed as being the President of the Bank of American Fork. The 192~ issue lists him in this same position. He died in 1928. JAMES SARAH ANNADElLA BETSY JAMES CHIPMAN was born April 9, 1839 in Far West. Caldwell Co. Missouri. Died in Salt Lake City. Utah October 13. 1922. Father of 16 children. He was a merchant. banker and rancher. The Chipman Mer· canitle Company, which he founded in 1872, stands as a continuous landmark in American Fork to his integrity. He established the original Bank of American Fork and was a leading stockholder in several banks. His ranches were situated in Mexico and Idaho. He was the first elected treasurer of the State of Utah in 1896. His initiative carried him far in the business world. He lived a long active life. SARAH ANNADELLA GREEN was born in Nauvoo, Hancock Co .. Illinois. Her parents were converts from Hamilton, Mawson Co .. New York. She, as a small child. with her parents migrated to Utah in 1847. locating in the Salt Lake Valley. thence to American Fork in the fall of 1853. Here she met James Chipman, a promising young man of the community. She was married at age fifteen and died just before her twenty-first birthday. leaving four small children.
