Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Christensen House is one of approximately 150 Victorian Eclectic style, Crosswing type houses that were constructed in American Fork during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and survive today. Most of these buildings were constructed as modest farmhouses for the "middle-class" of American Fork: small scale farmers and livestock raisers, and small business owners. This house shares many characteristics of other similar houses, including soft-fired (adobe) brick construction, a sandstone foundation, a cross gabled roof, and wood, Victorian style ornament on the porch and window surrounds. The house is one of the best examples of the Victorian Eclectic Crosswing housing type in the city. It retains many historic, character defming features often lost through time on historic buildings, including decorative details, a sawn wood shin e roof, original doors and windows, and outbuildings. Although the house has been changed and many additions made since it was constructed, all of these changes were made within the historic period (at least 50 years ago). As originally constructed c.1872, the house was a gable roofed, brick hall parlor building with a main entrance that appears to have faced south. Soon after, a cross wing was added to the south side of the building, and the entrance was shifted to face east (the current front entrance). Around 1880 another cross wing was added to the south side of the house immediately west of the first addition. All of these additions are unified by their common brick construction, and similar decorative details, such as decorative brickwork over the window hoods. Around 1910 the front wraparound porch was added to the east side of the house. With its square wood columns and unadorned cornice, the porch reflects the simple Colonial and Classical Revival styles that surpassed the Victorian styles in popularity during this time. Apart from these changes, the house (especially the exterior) remains as it was when owned by the Christensen family. Two historic outbuildings still stand on the property. One is a c.1880 root cellar located a few feet west of the house. The other is a c.1920 brick garage with a gable roof southwest of the house. According to the one of current owners of this house, Mrs. Norma Penrod, it was built in 1872 by Hans Christensen, Sr. Christensen (1819-1880) was a native of Denmark who converted to the LDS Church in 1856. He emigrated to Utah soon after, and was married to Maren Jorgensen, another Danish convert, in 1863 in Salt Lake City. They settled in American Fork and built this house on a sizable piece ofland at what was then the edge of town. The house served as one of several overnight way stations for southbound travelers, bringing visitors to the large Christensen household which numbered eleven, including Hans, Maren, seven children and Hans' two additional wives, Ellen Anderson and Annie Jorgensen. In 1880 Hans Christensen Sr. died; his estate was not settled until 1885, when Maren Christensen passed away. The $6117.00 This text message is used to keep the image from rotating in ocr process. Hans Christensen, Jr., who was eleven at the time of his father's death, inherited the house at 210 S. 100 West and nine acres ofland. In 1894 Hans, Jr. married Sarah Evaline Spratley in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in this house, where they raised two children. Hans, Jr. found success in livestock and farming, and also worked on the railroad lines in Utah County and through Parley's Canyon. Polk Directories list him as Vice President of the American Fork Co-op; according to his obituary, he was also a director of the Peoples State Bank, the Utah State Farm Bureau, and a member of the American Fork City Council from 1912-1919. In 1927 Sarah Christensen died. In 1928 Hans, Jr. married Alice Keddington. They remained in the house until Hans ' death in 1956. In 1959 Alice K. Christensen divided and sold her husband's land holdings, including two houses west of this house on 200 South. 210 S. 100 West was sold to the current owners, Elwood and Norma Penrod, at that time.
