Young house is one story brick bungalow with prairie school styling and is in excellent condition. The house is located at 136 South 100 West, American Fork, Utah. This house is a unique example of a well preserved prairie style bungalow. The foundation is brick/concrete and roof is asphalt shingle. There is minor damage to stucco covering foundation brickwork/concrete and some damage to roof shingles. The prairie school style elements include a low-pitched hip roof with projecting eaves over a rectangular floor plan on a plastered brick foundation. J The house also includes wood casement front windows, leaded glass and wood banding on front porch columns. The main fayade is composed of the large porch under a hipped gable roof with large overhanging eaves. The porch is concrete with large, square brick columns topped by smaller wooden capitals. The ceiling of the porch and soffit and fascia is aluminum siding. All of the windows are original, including small wooden casement windows in the living room which have leaded glass. The front door is an original solid wood door with beveled glass. The interior of the house remains mostly original. The kitchen and bath have been remodeled, but the living room fireplace, oak plank flooring in the front rooms, plaster walls and wood trim around door openings are original and in very good condition. The house also has a list of telephone numbers posted on the wall reputed to be used by Clifford Young in his capacity as the President ofthe Peoples State Bank in American Fork.2 The house has 1,546 square feet and a full basement with an exterior basement entrance. The rear of the house was remodeled to enclose the rear porch and was covered in aluminum siding at an unknown date. The house sits on 311 0 of an acre lot. There are no outbuildings or garages remaining on the property. 5 HISTORY Architect/Builder: unknown Date of Construction: J9 J 7 Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with "S" or "c" (S = significant, C = contributing). Hans passed away in 1880 and the block was divided in two between his first wife and her children and the children of his second polygamist wife. This parcel belonged to his wife Ellen and her two sons Neils and Paul Christensen. This parcel was created along the north side of the Hans Christensen home by Hans' grandson Bernard N. Christensen in 1915. 3,4 Bernard sold the lot to Clifford E. Young and his wife Edith Grant Young on January 20, 1915. 5 The house was complete by 1917. The Clifford Young family lived in the home until a year after Clifford Young passed away on August 28, 1958. Clifford E Young was born December 7, 1883 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Dr. Seymour B Young, a member of the First Council of the Seventy and Elizabeth Riter Young. Grant on June 20, 1911 and moving to American Fork. In 1913, Clifford began working at the newly organized People's State Bank. He was president of the bank for many years. Clifford also served two terms as a state senator in the Utah legislature and two terms as city councilman in American Fork. Clifford was active in the LDS faith and was stake president of the Alpine Stake for 13 years and in 1941 was appointed as assistant to the Council of the Twelve Apostles. Clifford died in American Fork August 2], 1958. 6 Edith Grant was the fourth of six children born to Heber J Grant and Lucy Stringham. She was born April 2, 1885 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Edith graduated from LDS High School and the University of Utah. In 1906, she traveled to Europe to study voice. Edith died of a heart attack August 20, 1947 in American Fork.7 On January 5, 1959 the house was sold to Alma A. Madsen and his wife Emma L. Madsen who lived in the house from] 959 until 2005. Lois Larsen Madsen http://www.deseretnews.com/ artide/ print/ 1343653/ 0bituary-E-Lois-Larsen-Madsen.html Deseret News Obituary: E. Lois Larsen Madsen Published: Friday. July 29 200511:45 a.m. MDT E. Lois Larsen Madsen 1913 -- 2005 Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Emma Lois Larsen Madsen, slipped peacefully away from us July 27, 2005. We will miss her love, leadership and friendship. Lois was born September 1, 1913 to Emma Petersen and Erastus Snow Larsen in Castle Dale, Utah. She graduated from Central High School in Castle Dale where she was an honor student and member of the Pep Club. She married her high school sweetheart, Alma Andersen Madsen, on April 21, 1933 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with six children and spent most of their married life in American Fork. Alma passed away April 16, 1985. She was active in her community and in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as PTA President of Harrington Elementary School, President of the Cultural Arts Club, President of the Relief Society and Primary, ward and stake chairman for BYU Education Week and receptionist in the Provo LDS Temple. After losing her sight, she inspired her family and everyone she met with her positive attitude. She taught quietly, by example, and emulated the Savior's love. She was a perfect example to her family. Lois will be remembered for her unfailing love and testimony of the Gospel. We will miss her tremendously; she truly was a strength to all who were blessed to be associated with her. Lois is survived by her children: Clifford 1. (Lois), Castle Dale; Don 1. (Betty), Springville; Calvin A. (Sherry), Murray; Colleen (Michael F.) Manning, South Jordan; Betty Jean (Larry R.)Miner, Highland; Annette, Provo; 25 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grand-children; sister, Estelle Reed and brother Vaughn Larsen. Preceded in death by her husband Alma, granddaughter Angela Miner, five sisters and four brothers. Services will be held Saturday, July 30, 2005 at 12 noon in the American Fork 27th Ward, 165 N. 350 W. under the direction of Anderson & Sons Mortuary. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11:45 at the church prior to services. Interment, American Fork Cemetery. A special thanks to the angels in the American Fork Beehive Home who have lovingly cared for Lois. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the LDS Missionary Fund.
