Paxman house is a contributing one story brick bungalow type house with typical early bungalow styling and is in good condition with only minor alterations. The house is located at 128 South 100 West, American Fork, Utah. This house is a good example of a well preserved simple Utah bungalow. The foundation is concrete and roof is asphalt shingle. Bungalow style elements include a low-pitched roof, clipped gable with exposed framing elements and a large covered porch with large brick columns. The house also has a decorative basketweave brick course above the foundation line. The house is in very good condition, except some damage to asphalt shingles and roof plywood. 1 The main fa~ade is primarily composed of the large porch under the roof gable. The porch is concrete with large, square brick columns. The ceiling of the porch is original wood/cardboard with small exposed framing element. The house also has a projecting bay on the north side of the front fa~ade. All ofthe windows are original, with aluminum framed storm windows on the exterior. The front door is an original three window solid wood door and there are several original solid wood interior doors. The interior of the house has been remodeled, but retains the original oak plank flooring in the living room, which has been converted to be a bedroom. The house has 1,198 square feet and a full basement. The only alteration to the original house is a large roofed patio attached to the rear of the house. The construction date is unknown, but the patio existed in the 1965 Utah County Tax Assessment card. The construction, with its exposed rafters matches the bungalow/craftsman style of the main structure. 2 There is a contributing garage located on the property. The garage was constructed circa 1948. 3 The garage is 18'x20' concrete block on a concrete slab. It has a plank siding east wall and gable roof with asphalt shingles. 5ffiSTORY Date of Construction: 1925 Architect/Builder: unknown Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with (see instructions for details) ~ Agriculture Economics ~ Architecture Education _ Archeology _ Engineering Art Entertainment/ ~ Commerce Recreation Communications _ Ethnic Heritage _ Community Planning ~ Exploration! & Development Settlement Conservation Health/Medicine "s" or "C" (S = significant, _Industry Invention _Landscape Architecture Law Literature _ Maritime History _ Military _ Performing Arts C = contributing). Explain and justifY any significant themes marked above. Use continuation sheets as necessary Esther Christensen Paxman received the property where she and Edwin Paxman built their house from her father Hans Christensen's estate in 1925. Hans Christensen was an 1857 handcart pioneer who moved to American Fork in 1858 and took up farming, which he learned in his native Denmark. Hans Christensen emigrated from Denmark with his first wife, Ellen Jorgensen Christensen. Ellen had two sons, Niels and Paul Christensen. Esther was born July 11, 1877 and was the sixth of seven children born to Hans and his polygamist second wife, Maren (Mary) Jorgensen. When Hans passed away at the age of 61 in 1880 and Maren followed in 1885, Esther was raised by Hans' first wife Ellen until her death in 1896.4 Hans was deeded the entire frontage of 100 West from 100 South to 200 South on March 2, 1872 after the American Fork survey. 5 He divided his estate into two parts, one-third to his first wife and her two children from a previous marriage, and two thirds to his children with Maren. He gave the northern section of the block and half of 6 his house to the children, and the southern section and half of his house to Ellen and her son Paul Christensen. As each of the children grew up, they were deeded land from the larger parcel, including the building site of the 7 original house, which was demolished in 1912. On May 8, 1925, Esther received the deed to lot at 128 South 100 West and with her husband, built a modem bungalow house. 8 Esther was raised in American Fork and educated in the local public school system. She married Edwin W. 9 Paxman, also a descendent of early American Fork settlers, in Salt Lake City, Utah September 13, 1906. Edwin Washington Paxman was born July 4, 1872 in American Fork to William Paxman and Ann Rushen Keys Paxman. William was an early settler in American Fork and was the first President of the American Fork Cooperative Store and Smoot Lumber Company in Provo. Edwin was educated in Nephi, Utah until seventeen years of age. He then worked in the lumber business, until he became manager of the Bonneville Lumber Company and its lumber mill. Esther Christensen was Edwin's second wife. He initially married Emma Jenkins, who died in 1904. Edwin and Esther had six children, five of whom survived to adulthood.!O Esther Paxman died April 25, 1950 in American Fork and Edwin Paxman died December 11, 1964 in Los Angeles, California. Edwin and Esther lived in the house they built at 128 South 100 West until September 11, 1942, when they sold the house to Harold H. Holley and Leah C. Holley. Harold Holley was an automobile dealer who moved to American Fork to manage the Alpine Motor Company.!! He was also a scout leader and active in his religion. Harold later became a counselor to the President of the Provo Temple. On February I, 1955, Harold and Leah Holley sold the house to Paul G. and Marcelene B Gauger, who resided there from 1955 through August 26, 1980. In 1980, Marcelene Gauger sold the house to Johna Hendren and Wesley Swenson. On August 26, 1990, Johna (Hendren) Lew and Wesley Swenson sold the house to the current owners Dennis J and Darlene Rowley. 4 Christensen, Allen Clare, The Christensen Family a/Sora, Denmark and American Fork, Utah, USA, Bountiful Utah: Family History Publishers, 1994. ( ?q 25·1_ Edwin Washington Paxman, a well known lumber merchant of American Fork, was born July 4, 1872, in the city which is still his home. His father, William Paxman, was a native of Essex county, England, and came to America in 1856. Making his way to Utah, he was appointed superintendent of the American Fork Cooperative Store. He afterward removed to Provo and in connection with the father of Senator Reed Smoot organized the Smoot Lumber Company. He was afterward called to Nephi and became head of Juab stake, in which position he continued to the time of his death. He was also on a mission to Europe covering two years. It was Mr. Paxman who was the promoter of the Old Folks Day. He took this up by interesting old people at his own home and developed an organization whose reunion day is one ofthe most attractive and important social features ofthe country. This work he undertook in the early seventies. He died at American Fork in October, 1897, and his remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Nephi. The mother of Edwin W. Paxman bore the maiden name of Ann Rushen Keys. She was born, reared and married in England and came to the new world in 1856, residing for some years in Boston before removing to Utah. Her last days were spent in American Fork, where she departed this life April 10, 1919. She was the mother of eleven children, nine of whom are yet living. The father was very prominent in the work of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was for four years in New Zealand, where he had the Book of Mormon translated into the language of the people. Edwin W. Paxman obtained his primary education in the schools of Nephi and there continued his studies until he reached the age of seventeen, when he put aside his textbooks and made his initial step in the business world, entering the employ of Adams & Grace Brothers, dealers in lumber at Nephi. He remained with them for three years continuously and was associated with the business altogether for seven years. In 1898 he was sent on a mission to the eastern states, spending two years in Pennsylvania. He afterward returned to Nephi, where he remained for two years, and in 1902 removed to American Fork, where he engaged in carpentering for several years. Three years ago he took charge of the interests of the Bonneville Lumber Company at American Fork and has since been in control of the business at this place. His previous experience in connection with the lumber trade well qualified him for his duties and responsibilities that devolve upon him in this connection. He has been very successful in the management of the big plant at American Fork and is a worthy representative of one of the important corporate interests of the state, the company having a number of lumberyards in many of the cities of Utah. In 1897 Mr. Paxman was united in marriage to Miss Emma Jenkins, of Nephi, a daughter of James and Margaret Jenkins, who were pioneers of this state but have now passed away. Mr. and Mrs. Paxman had four children, all of whom are deceased, and the mother has likewise been called to her final rest. On the 13th of September, 1906, Mr. Paxman was married to Esther Christensen, of American Fork, a daughter of Hans and Marian Christensen. They had six children, of whom three are living: Emma C., twelve years of age; Helois M., five years of age; and Harold, who is in his first year. Mr. and Mrs. Paxman are widely and favorably known in American Fork, where they have made for themselves a creditable social position, while in business circles Mr. Paxman's name and place are enviable. · .' ,.'
