The Jesse & Cora Crookston house may have originated as a one story single cell or hall parlor adobe and stucco structure based on interior wall thickness and door openings in the front living room. The house was constructed after 1890 and was significantly enlarged and remodeled into a Greek RevivallVictorian Eclectic brick crosswing prior to 1908. 1,2 The land was deeded to Jesse Crookston October 14, 1897, which may have been when he began construction ofthe original section of the house. 3 The Jesse Crookston house is located at 125 South 100 West in American Fork. The house is typical of other local contemporary crosswing houses and is one of the earlier examples of brick houses in American Fork. Although the house has been extensively remodeled, the Greek Revival and Victorian Eclectic elements are still evident. The Greek Revival elements include gable ends with raking cornices and a pedimented porch. The Victorian elements include decorative dogtooth arched brickwork over original crosswing windows and Queen Anne style wood porch columns. 4 The Jesse & Cora Crookston house walls are brick over adobe and stick-framing with brick veneer. All walls have been covered with aluminum siding. The original portion of the house was covered circa 1975 and the entire house was covered in the past two years. The roof is asphalt shingled and all brick original chimneys have been removed. The house foundation is a combination of stone and concrete, with all stone elements refaced with mortar. The primary fayade of the Jesse & Cora Crookston house faces west and retains the massing and some stylistic elements of the crosswing house. The gable end of the crosswing has a large single pane window with a low arched decorative brick element. The circa 1912 porch is located on the right side of the fayade, and has an original door and tall, narrow double hung window opening. The porch is concrete and is in good condition. No original windows remain, and most windows are vinyl. The original adobe structure was approximately 16'x20'. The single cell adobe was covered in light colored brick circa 1912 when the house was expanded into a 1,084 square foot crosswing-type house. The addition included a gabled kitchen and rear shed roofed room. In 1973, a second addition was added to the south side of the kitchen, extending east. This stick-framed brick addition was 408 square feet, and included a basement. A third addition was added to the rear ofthe structure approximately 2010, making the house a total of 2,617 square feet on the s main floor and 1,534 in the basement. The interior of the house has been extensively remodeled, but elements of the original construction remain, including an exterior door from the crosswing front room onto the porch which is hidden by exterior siding. Also, there are several irregular sized door openings suggesting the original adobe construction and additions. There are no outbuildings still associated with the property. A large barn located on the back of the lot was demolished several years ago. 1 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, American Fork, 1890. Use continuation sheets as necessary Born in Dysart, Fife, Scotland on June 16, 1845, Jesse Crookston emigrated from Scotland to Utah in 1855 with his father George Crookston and mother Jane Hutchison Crookston and seven brothers and sisters. After a year in Salt Lake City and a short period in Kaysville, Utah, the family permanently settled in American Fork and began farming. 6 The family settled on 100 South Street, then known as Jackson Street and census records show three 7 Crookston families living next to each other in 1880. Jesse Crookston married Sarah Proctor November 2, 1876 in American Fork. Cora was born April 1, 1859 in American Fork, Utah to English immigrant parents John and Martha Parker Proctor. 8 ,9 On October 14, 1870, after the first official land survey of American Fork, George Crookston was granted title to two lots on 100 West Street at the site ofthe Jesse & Cora Crookston house. lO It is likely George grew vegetables on those lots, as well as on his larger land parcels outside of American Fork. I I George Crookston died November 25, 1880 in American Fork. 12 On October 14, 1897, George Crookston's family officially divided the two lots on 100 West between two of his sons, Jesse and Thomas Crookston. It is likely that Jesse & Cora began construction on their house located at 125 South 100 West after that property division. 13 Jesse Crookston worked his entire life as a laborer, the 1900 census showing him as a gold miner, the 1913 Provo City Directory lists him as a teamster and the 1920 census lists odd jobs as his occupation. Jesse was ill several years prior to his death May 8, 1928. Jesse and Sarah Crookston had six children, five of whom survived to adulthood. 14 On January 5,1925, Sarah sold the house and property to their oldest Son, Jesse Proctor Crookston. 15 Sarah Crookston died August 31, 1935 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jesse P. Crookston was born April 17, 1876 in American Fork and married Cora May Darling on November 2, 1898 in her hometown ofLehi, Utah. Jesse P. and Cora owned and lived in the house at 125 South 100 West from 6 Obituary, George Crookston, American Fork Citizen Newspaper, June 26, 1926 7 Year: 1880; Census Place: American Fork, Utah, Utah; Roll: J338; Family History Film: 1255338; Page: 276B; Enumeration District: 088. 8 Obituary, Jesse Crookston, American Fork Citizen Newspaper, May 12 & 19, 1928. 9 Obituary, Cora D. Cora lived alone in the house at 125 South 100 West until six month prior to her death on June 16, 1955. Jesse P. and Cora had five children. 19 After Cora's death on June 16, 1955, her surviving children sold the house to Frank P and Jean H Wofford, who lived in the house from 1958 through Frank's death in September 200l. 20 Frank Wofford was World War II veteran and sheep rancher for 50 years around Utah County.21 On January 29, 2003 the house was sold to the current owners Dallas B. and Jane Nielson. 3 DOCUMENTATION (continued) Bibliographical References (books, articles, interviews, etc.) Obituary, George Crookston, American Fork Citizen Newspaper, June 26, 1926 Obituary, Jesse Crookston, American Fork Citizen Newspaper, May 12 & 19, 1928 Obituary, Jesse P Crookston, American Fork Citizen Newspaper, February 20, 1942 Obituary, Jean H Wofford, Deseret News Newspaper, June 11,2000 Obituary, Sarah Proctor Crookston, American Fork Citizen Newspaper, September 6, 1935 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, American Fork, 1890.
