Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Lucian & Olive Crandall House is one of the more elaborate examples in American Fork of the Victorian Eclectic, Central Block w/Projecting Bays type house. Although it combines many elements of different popular architectural styles of the time, and is therefore considered an example of the Victorian Eclectic style, the house exhibits many elements of the Queen Anne style, which was most popular in Utah during the years 1885-1905. These elements include the decorative patterned wood shingles on the gables and the asymmetrical facade. Other Victorian elements on the house, not unique to examples of the Queen Anne style, include segmental decorative brick window hoods, carved wood window and door surrounds, and wall dormer windows that project up the wall of the house, through the roof cornice. A rarely surviving historic element is the decorative metal ridge cap. Ridge caps were common to buildings such as this, and often were even more elaborately detailed. When old wood shingled roofs were replaced by asphalt shingled roofs, most ridge caps ended up at the dump or the scrap metal dealer. It is worth saving on this house when the roof is replaced. The house appears to be little altered from its original appearance. The front door lacks a porch or stoop and stairs. This would generally indicate that the original porch was removed at some point. But the 1938 Sanborn Map (the only edition on which the completed house appears) does not show a front porch on the house. This may indicate that while the house was designed to accommodate a front porch (thus, the front facing door), it was never constructed. The de facto front door of the house is on the east facade . The concrete stoop and small canopy over the door are later additions (c.1965). Aside from these modest changes, the house retains its historic appearance. 1938 Sanborn Maps do not show any outbuildings on the lot. No outbuildings are currently on the property. 5 HISTORY ;;;;.,: . ;;/·;;;,J,;"",k· : ~ "" ,,, . It was part of a larger parcel owned by Phoebe, who was the plural wife of American Fork founding father Stephen Chipman. In an informal interview conducted in June 21,1997, American Fork Historic Commission Chair Juel Belmont indicated that the house was locally known as the Lucian & Olive Crandall House. Olive Chipman Crandall (1864-1913) was the daughter of Stephen and Phoebe Chipman. She married Lucian Delancy Crandall in 1887. They built this house sometime after 1908, because it doesn't show up on the Sanborn Maps published that year. The Crandalls never clearly held ownership ofthe property; it appears that title to the land was never transferred to them (or anyone else) after Phoebe Chipman's death in 1872. In 1925, twelve years after Olive Crandall's death in 1913, title to the property was finally transferred to the estate of Olive Crandall. Lucian Crandall remained in the house with his new wife, Thelma, until his death. Mrs. Crandall still owns the property. LUCIAN D. & OLIVE C. For future reference, the historical narrative should discuss all available (and pertinent) information concerning the owners/occupants of the buildings. Obituaries are needed for each and every person who owned and/or lived in the building (for some period of time) during the historic period. Photographs should not be mounted (not archival). /william & Haydee Thornton House_ . 88 S 100 West '~ ~ ,/Thomas & Emily Chipman House 219 S 100 West o'2,1~1 /Bernard & Maud Christensen House 154 S 100 West o L1.
