The Shipley house is one ofthe few surviving early examples in American Fork of the Greek Revival style, Hall-Parlor house. Such houses were the most common form of house built by Mormon settlers in communities throughout Utah during the pioneer period (1847-1869). Like the Shipley house, they were most often made of adobe laid up over a coarse stone foundation, had gable roofs with wood shingles, and exhibited few stylistic details. The original house was the present front two room section, with a small wood frame ell to the rear. The ell was replaced c.1900 by the present adobe kitchen wing. The walls of both the original wing of the house and the rear addition were most likely originally exposed adobe. Later, the adobe was stuccoed to protect the soft adobe brick face from the weather (a common practice with adobe buildings); this probably occurred during the historic period .. At the same time, the stone foundation was reinforced with an application of a layer of concrete veneer. The front and side porch slabs and stairs were rebuilt, most likely at the time the foundation was reinforced. The only historic outbuilding known to have ever existed on the property was a sizable wood barn that appears on the 1908 Sanborn Map. It was located at the northeast corner of the lot associated with the house at the time (now part of the 85 S. 100 West property). It was demolished by 1908. No outbuildings are currently on the property. Shipley house stands on land originally deeded to Joseph Shipley in 1870, when American Fork was first surveyed and formal land records began. Shipley owned all oflot two, which included the parcel directly east of this house. Like many of the first settlers of American Fork, Joseph Shipley (1813-1901) was a native of England. He was converted to the Mormon Church at the age of thirty while still in England. His first wife, Elizabeth Garley, whom he married in 1841, also converted at this time. Soon after, they emigrated to Utah. In 1854 Joseph married Elizabeth Anderton. The family lived for a time in Brigham City and then moved to American Fork c.1859, where Joseph became a farmer. No further information was located for the Shipley family; this information was found in the database of the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The exact construction date ofthis house is unknown; the architectural style of the building indicates a construction date of c.1870. Shipley also built the house directly east of this one. After his death in 1901, two of his sons each received a house and half of the lot. Benjamin Shipley received the adjacent house, while Joseph Anderton Shipley received this house. Joseph A. Shipley owned the house until 1912. The rear kitchen addition and front porch were constructed during his period of ownership. In 1909 Shipley sold the house to Maurice W. Logie. In turn, Logie sold the house to Ellery S. Binnes in 1912. After Mr. Binnes' death in 1918 the house passed to his wife, Louisa A. Binnes, and their children. In 1926, Louisa, by now remarried and listed in deed records as Louisa A. Wight, sold the house to John H. Hatch. He sold it to Samuel J. Lindsey in 1927. In 1930 the house was sold to Charles 1.
