The Spratley House is one of approximately 150 Victorian Eclectic style, Crosswing type houses that were constructed in American Fork during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and survive today. Most of these buildings were constructed as modest farmhouses for the "middle-class" of American Fork: small scale farmers and livestock raisers, and small business owners. This house, with its well-maintained exterior and sensitive additions, is one of the best examples of this housing type in the city. It shares many characteristics of other similar houses, including soft-ftred (adobe) brick construction, a sandstone foundation, a cross gabled roof, and wood, Victorian style ornament on the porch and window surrounds. The house was renovated in the early 1990's. This renovation, which primarily involved the addition of a rear wing and garage, was sensitively designed and constructed in a manner consistent with current preservation standards. Original details and materials were duplicated for the new addition, including the original building's oversized, grey colored bricks. Numerous outbuildings once stood on the property, as shown on Sanborn Maps from 1890, 1908, and 1938. A brick outbuilding (smokehouse?) and several wood frame agricultural outbuildings were enclosed by a corral at the northeast comer of the lot. It appears from a cursor sidewalk examination that the smokehouse has survived, though none of the other historic outbuildings are still standing. A brick, gable roofed, one car garage was built in the early 1990's as part of the larger renovation project. It stands immediately east of the house. Explain andjustifY any significant themes marked above. Use continuation sheets as necessary. This house appears to have been built by George Spratley and his wife, Mary Ann. Spratley was a native of Manchester, England. He married Mary Ann Brooks in 1831, converted to the church and eventually settled with his family in American Fork, where he became a farmer. 1890 Sanborn Maps show two small wood frame dwellings, one of which was by then abandoned, on the east end of the lot. The present house was built between 1890 and 1908, when it appeared on the Sanborn Map for that year. This date does not match that supplied in the 1996 American Fork Christmas Home Tour Booklet, which gives a construction date of before 1/872. No other information that would narrow down the exact construction date has been found as part of this research. In 1892 the Spratleys sold the property to Joseph S. Wild. Joseph and his wife, Eliza Ann Shelley Wild, owned the house for the next thirty years. Joseph S. Wild, a farmer, died in 1928; his wife followed him a year later, in 1929. The only listing found in Polk Directories for the couple is in the 1929 edition, where Eliza A. Wilde is listed as the widow of Joseph S., farmer. Eliza willed the house to her daughter, Hazel, and Hazel's husband, Stephen L. Shelley. They sold the house shortly thereafter, in 1930, to June S. Wright. In 1946, Mrs. Wright transferred title to her son and daughter-in-law, Glenn A. and Dorothea G. Wright. They owned the house until 1984.
