Reconnaissance Survey data from 1987 and 1992 show that this house is one of approximately 25 examples of the Victorian Eclectic style, Central Block with Projecting Bays form house in American Fork. The house exhibits many common elements found on other houses of this type and style in American Fork, including fired brick construction and multiple dormers projecting from its central, hipped roof. The simple, classically-inspired architectural details on the Brown House, such as a classical cornice along the roof eaves (complete with returns at each projecting gable), along with the simple square porch columns and large fixed sash and double-hung windows, suggest that this house was constructed at the end of the Victorian styles' popularity. In this house, many of the door and window openings are capped by stone lintels, with matching stone sills. The building rests on a sandstone foundation, and is topped with an asphalt shingled hipped roof. The building appears to have remained relatively free of alterations and additions. Recent renovation work has concentrated on maintenance and preservation items, including a new roof, removable storm sashes in several windows, and new paint. The 1938 Sanborn Maps show three wood framed outbuildings on the lot. One of these, an automobile garage, still stands northeast of the house. The other outbuildings appear to have been demolished. This house replaced a brick dwelling and several associated agricultural outbuildings that appear on 1890 and 1908 Sanborn Maps. Presumably, this was the home of Lucy C. Steele, who owned the property from 1877 to 1901. She sold the property to Martha Boley Buckwalter in 1901. Mrs. Buckwalter's husband, Albert William Buckwalter, was a partner in Boley & Buckwalter, wool growers, with Martha's father, Elisha A. Boley. In 1906 Mrs. Buckwalter sold the property to Lilian King Brown. Little information was located on Mrs. Brown, though information from the LDS Family History Library indicates that she was born in American Fork, in 1873, and died in 1941, also in American Fork. On Christmas Day, 1890, she was married to Joseph Webb Brown. The house that currently stands on the property replaced the older house that stood on the site sometime after 1908, but before 1938, as shown on Sanborn Maps. The architectural style of the house, which was popular in Utah in the late 19th and early 20th century, suggests that it was built c.191 O. Mrs. Brown remained owner of the house after the death of her husband (in 1913) until her death in 1941. In 1944, Robert M. Brown became owner of the house by decree. He owned the house until 1987.
