Description IPv6 on Campus Backbone - Dave Packham With IPv6, the general user won't see any difference, but to those of us in this room (don't let it out) - a lot of scary possibilities with it. Example: IPconfig - how can a general user find their IPv6 address (128 digits long)? Cool parts: increased address space. Lots of gotchas - when enabled on a router, the router becomes a DHCP server. Peer-to-peer IPSec connections; a lot of security concerns. However, a great protocol overall. A white paper on IPv6 will be available on the OIT website. Training sessions will be available before IPv6 is fully implemented. Many Asian countries have deployed IPv6 networks and could be actively scanning. We (the US) are just getting on this boat. Federal mandate to move to this rapidly (2008). Request your IPv6 address space through IPAlloc. If it's for a production network, ISO will do a review. They need to upgrade some code to support this - planned in the next 3 months. Services need to be available (not blocked by firewall). ISO has a list of issues to make IT Managers aware of. Nelson Beebe: easy to do scans on IP address subset. Harder to do it on IPv6 (for both bad and good guys). ISO will make sure we have a PoC for each set of IPv6 space. A non-routed test VLAN will allow some testing: auto-configuration, pings, turn it on and off, protect it, etc. Find all your application snafus here first. NOC Health review - will treat the request just like IPv4. Will turn it up, do the scan, then open it up.
