Network Overview by Tim Urban This was a very good overview; we'll have Tim update this for this group regularly. Tim asked: What's missing from the list for the network in the future? Hang: video, video-on- demand. Dave P: QoS will be saved for video conferencing, while video streaming is buffered. Need to look at multicast grids. ?? - buildings without demarks. Send [e-mail] information on buildings without demarks. Dave Huth: planning two logical and redundant links to every building; if your building doesn't have two links, send email to the NOC. Nelson: redundant electrical supply - something that should be considered because without electricity there is no network. CHPC has had severe power problems. Might make sense to plan for longer battery backups (8 hours or so). Dan Hutten: when Library stuff got moved out, wasn't it going to go back? Tim: dist nodes will NOT go back but maybe some servers and a switch. Dan Hutten: need a map of the campus network and the hospital network and how they connect (Route Reflector map - publish it). Dan Hutten: 128.110? Tim & Brad: lots of progress has been made (90% done); just a few for technical reasons. Brad, Bryce & Tom do a lot of the IP Alloc stuff in the NOC. Caprice: no longer serving time on the DSN servers. Please don't use fiber or ns for time services; this will be turned off on Feb 17th. DNS shouldn't be on 128.110. Lookup ns1.utah.edu and fiber1.utah.edu. ISO can send out reports/reminders on all these issues. Building 10 has their demark plugged into OIT's UPS. UPS power problems get sent to the Plant Ops gets a notice when there are power problems (vs network problems). More critical locations will likely get two demark switches for redundancy - still working through. Rick: have added a few transfer switches on what had been classified as high end. Let us know if you fall in that kind of situation. If your building isn't connected with a demark - we will put one in. If your building doesn't have conduit, there needs to be a discussion on who will pay for this.
