Home at 572 West Winchester built in 1862 |
Subject |
Murray homes |
Description |
Levi & Emma Goff Naylor were very early pioneer settlers in the area and built their first home out of adobe from the clay banks behind their home. Levi emigrated from England to Utah in 1860 and Emma followed arriving in Salt Lake in September 1862 and married her sweetheart from England, Levi Naylor, one month later. The Goff family knew the trade of adobe brickmaking and taught the skill to other settlers around them. Other adobe brickyards were operated by several neighboring settlers including the large Turner family. This structure dated as 1893 with SL County Assessors. A family descendant notes that a stream used to run in front of the home. Subsequent owners included Sam & Mary Naylor (daughter) Beckstead and Grant & Maggie Beckstead (granddaughter) Mangum. Vince and Peggy Millet who purchased the home from the Mangum's grandson, demolished this house to build a new home on the property. |
