Title |
Home at 237 East Vine Street built in 1890 |
Subject |
Murray homes |
Description |
These wood frame homes provide an interesting contrast to the other brick homes that remain from Atwood Row. An early pioneer, Simeon Atwood produced the first fired brick which was more durable than adobe brick. The brickyard was located across the street where the pallpark now stands and provided brick for many beautiful homes, the first brick school house and several churches and public buildings. One of these little wood frame homes was likely built by Walter Henry Atwood from timber from the canyons for his wife Deidamia and his second wife, Julia Dibble. Since the building date from the Salt Lake County Assessors list the building date as 1890s, these homes have been altered or are located on the same property of that first frame home. Directly to the east, he later built the first mansion in the city and the first home made of fired brick in the entire Utah Territory. |
