Title Design and optimization of a neutron radiography beamport capability with the University of Utah triga reactor
Date 2021
Description The potential of employing the University of Utah 90-kWt TRIGA research reactor (UUTR) to generate a high-performance neutron imaging beamline is computationally investigated. The UUTR neutron beamline spectrum is profiled using 3-D Monte Carlo and deterministic SN radiation transport codes to assess pertinent imaging parameters aimed to fulfill pre-construction requirements. Background information on particle physics, transport methods, biological dose rate contributions, and radiography applications are presented. Recently-published articles regarding the profiling, design and optimization of the neutron imaging system, full analysis of primary beamline parameters, and all associated shielding assessments are included to support a fully-functioning imaging capability. This work is concluded with discussions summarizing computational findings and recommendations for future work. From these data and detailed simulations, the University of Utah will have the ability to custom design the most appropriate and advantageous neutron radiography facility for its desired imaging purposes and applications.
