Membership in WFWS is automatic for any member of the different regional societies. Today, the federation includes over 5,500 artists in eleven regional societies located in nine states west of the Mississippi River. The purpose of the WFWS is to stimulate interest in water media, exchange educational information, encourage and recognize artistic excellence and promote the visibility of watercolor in the West through annual exhibitions. Member artists are not only encouraged to learn and strive for excellence but are also recognized for their achievement through the competitive process. WFWS signature status is an Western Federation of Watercolor Societies AWA Arizona Watercolor Association • Phoenix, AZ CWS Colorado Watercolor Society • Denver, CO Idaho Watercolor Society • Boise, ID NVWS Nevada Watercolor Society • Las Vegas, NV NMWS New Mexico Watercolor Society • Albuquerque, NM SDWS San Diego Watercolor Society • San Diego, CA SAWG Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild • Tucson, AZ SWS Southwestern Watercolor Society • Dallas, TX UWS Utah Watercolor Society • Salt Lake City, UT WSO Watercolor Society of Oregon • Portland, OR WTWS West Texas Watercolor Society • Lubbock, TX 2 honored and desirable way to show this growth and is awarded to an artist after he/she has been juried into three WFWS Exhibits. The annual juried show is hosted each year by a different regional member society. Each society in the federation is independent and autonomous and has one delegate to represent its society at the Annual Exhibition and Board of Delegates Meetings, hosted by a different member society each year on a rotating basis. This is the sixth time in the forty-four year history of the WFWS that the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild, a founding member of the WFWS, has hosted these events. “Souhwest Splash” was juried by Ted Nuttall, who selected one hundred paintings from just under 1000 entries and is on exhibit at The Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild Gallery, where we showcase works on paper created with a variety of water-based media. It has held a high quality standard since its inception and encourages us, as artists to keep driving toward excellence. To be a part of something so significant is a true honor. A great deal of planning, years of preparation, and many hours of work have gone into bringing this to fruition. It is gratifying to see it come together in a way that preserves the professionalism it so rightfully deserves. I am forever grateful for the many hands that already serve in other positions in SAWG who have generously donated their time, creativity and tireless efforts to this project. Thanks to all of the society delegates who do their part to link us together. Thanks to the throng of generous donors for their vital support. Thanks to all the artists who share their talents through artistic expressions and visual messages, and their families and friends who support them. Finally, my deepest thanks go to my husband for his unlimited support as I worked on this significant undertaking. Congratulations to the talented artists who had their paintings selected, and to all the artists who help maintain a high standard and quality of work that keeps us as water media artists ever reaching higher. Thank you to: Susan S. Morris The Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild (SAWG) is honored for the opportunity to host the 43rd Western Federation of Watercolor Societies Exhibition in our very own gallery and wish to welcome the delegates and their guests to Tucson. You might say that SAWG’s 50 year history resembles the tapestry of rich and colorful patterns that make up the collection of paintings in this exhibition. Today we continue that unique heritage of engaging our members through exhibiting their work and increasing skills, as well as promoting art education through community outreach. SAWG is committed to these values and principles and to sustaining a learning environment in an ever changing landscape of water media. A special thank you to all our donors and those individuals and businesses who contributed to the awards for the exhibit and to Susan Morris and her committee who have dedicated so many hours in preparation for this event. This Exhibition is a monumental undertaking. Yet, it is rewarding for the hosting society and provides us with an opportunity to share our beautiful city of Tucson. Enjoy the warm weather and this exceptional exhibit! I’m always amazed at the range of approaches and points of view presented by the members of a diverse group such as the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. I am inspired by the enthusiastic participation of the artists that brought about this body of work. It’s quite a challenge to select pieces that best represent such an effort. Aside from considerations for composition, technique, color, tone, texture, perspective, etc., what finally draws me to a painting is often inexplicable. In the end, I realize it is my own internal sense of direction, my own standards on which I must rely – setting aside what I feel anybody else might think and becoming my own juror. That was my approach as I reviewed the body of work presented for this exhibition. I was presented with a broad range of subject, style, and expression - and I believe I’ve selected pieces for the exhibition that represent well the passion and effort put forth. There were a number of works that especially spoke to me and I tried to acknowledge those. Finally, I congratulate each of you who submitted paintings – though, in the words of the great Canadian painter and writer, Robert Genn, “The real prize comes to the artist when the work is made”.
