The Shepherd House is a one-story bungalow. The home is made of brick and has a rectangular floor plan. It has hipped roof with a wide front porch. It has an end wall chimney, and also a chimney towards the rear of the dwelling. A small garage accompanies the home, located in the northeast portion of the lot. 5 HISTORY Architect/Builder: Bokke Postma Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with (see instructions for details) __Agriculture __Economics .§....Architecture __Education __Archeology __Engineering __Art __Entertainment/ Recreation __Commerce __Ethnic Heritage __Communications __Exploration! __Community Planning Settlement & Development __Health/Medicine __Conservation Date of Construction: "s" or "C" (S = significant, __Industry __Invention __Landscape Architecture __Law __Literature __Maritime History __Military __Performing Arts C = contributing). __Politics/ Government __Religion __Science __Social History __ Transportation __Other Write a chronological history of the property, focusing primarily on the original or principal owners & significant events. Explain andjustify any significant themes marked above. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The home was constructed in 1924 by Bokke Postma, a Dutch native and well-known local builder throughout the 1920s. He had purchased the property from Carrie Bischel, whose husband (Edward) had developed the block some years earlier--hence the name Bischel's Subdivision. Shortly after the home was built it was sold to Alberta and James Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd was a freight agent for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. The Shepherd's owned the home until 1932, however they did not live in it all those years. They moved to Salt Lake City and rented it out to various individuals during the late-I 920s. Including Alma C. Hyde, a local salesman. In 1928 they rented it out to Edgar and Ethel Earls, who ended purchasing the home in 1932. Edgar Earls was born in Kansas in 1886, a son of William and Mary Earls. He moved to Ogden in 1920, working for the John Scowcroft and Sons Company for nearly 30 years. His wife, Ethelyn, was born in 1892 in Idaho. She was active in the Child Culture Club and Children's Hour Club in Ogden. The couple was active in the LDS Church. The home was owned by the Earl family until Ethel's death in 1991. This text message is used to keep the image from rotating in ocr process. Be sure to crop the top .25" off after the ocr process.
