Abstract The use of oxygen in industrial furnaces represents the latest development in furnace technology. Apart from increasing the output of combustion processes without the need for major capital expenditure, oxygen can also be used to make energy-intensive combustion processes more economical. This is particularly important in view of the constantly increasing costs of primary energy. The efficiency of industrial combustion processes can be increased considerably not only by preheating the fuel and combustion air but also in particular by the use of oxygen. Oxygen is mostly used in combustion processes that require, for technical reasons, very high flame temperatures, high speeds of reaction or increased output. Alternatively, oxygen can also be used today in combustion processes which do not permit economic utilisation of the waste gas heat. The range of applications for oxygen has grown continuously in recent years. Today, in addition to the traditional applications in welding and flame cutting, oxygen is used in a wide and varied spectrum of applications in the metallurgical and chemical industries as well as in the cement, glass and enamel industries.
