Charles Kimber Sr. was born 31 August 1818 at Harnstead Norris Berkshire England to James Kimber and Hannah Pickett. Sellwood, daughter or He and Caroline James Sellwood and Diana Tidbury, were married in the church at Thatchum Berkshire England 2 August 1840, by Daniel W. Goddard, minister. They probably lived in Bucklebury about 8 years as four of their seven children were born there. 24 November 1841 at Thatchum. January 1843 at Bucklebury. Their first child named Edward was born Second child named Eliza Ann was born 11 She died 6 March 1856 and was buried in the church 'cemetery at Hermetage Parish of Hamstead Norris Berkshire. Third i child named Hannah was born 8 August 1844 at Bucklebury.She married William Eatwe11 and'remained in England where she died 16 December 1920. Fourth child Fanny was born 20 June 1847 at Buck1ebury. She died at Newbury Berkshire 26 October 1876 and was buried in the church yar4 at Newbury. bury. The fifth child Charles Jr. was bor~ 23 January 1851 at Buck+e- The sixth child William James was born 20 July 1854 at Bamstead Norris Berkshire. The seventh child Elizabeth Ann Vias born 6 January 1856 at Harnstead Norris.' He and his wife adopted the baby of the daughter Hannah. "":/l n11 I.lh Her name was Ellen and she was born 5 January 1864 at Hamstead Norris. It is an established fact that Charles had a brother John. And it has been confirmed that he Charles was a common laborer while in England as he told his children cf working in a brick yard and his son William told of working with his father in the wood and selling it. , He was baptized into the Cold Ash branch of the L.D.S. church 4 lbMt eeb~l by John Legg and ordained a priest 3 October 1847 at the same place. 1~45 Saturday 20 June 1868 Charles· Kimber and his wife Elisabeth Ann and granddaughter Ellen left Englar~ Caroline~ sons, daughter on the Packet ship Emerald Isle sailing from Liverpool with 876 saints aboard, under th~ direction of Hans Jensen Hals. They had quite an unpleasant journey as the engine for purifying salt water -broke and they had to return to Ireland days. ~7 ~or repairs which took sever~ They were six weeks on the ocean and there was much sickness with deaths at sea and others died in the hospital in New York. · They arrived at New York harbor August 11 and landed August 14. The family traveled on the Union Pacific Railroad to Council Bluffs and from there in cattle cars to Fort Benton which is about 700 miles west from Omaha. They arrived there August 25. Their granddaughter Ellen then four years old died at Fort Benton and was buried there. Tbey rested there for several days and then continued their trip by mule team to Salt Lake City arriving 25 September 1868. They stayed in Salt Lake City two days then went on to Tooele, Utah where they made the~r home for about eight years. They made their home with William Sellwood, a brother of Carol~ners for a short time and then moved into a one room house. where they spent their first winter in America. Their food consisted of potatoes, rlour and beet molasses. In the spring of 1~77 the Kimber Family came to Grouse Creek and settled on the Kimber ranch which had been located the previous spring - by' Charle s and William. Tliis was virgin country and offered unlimited opportunities for people to establish B.nd ~ts homes~ They made adobes and built a two room house. Here be sons farmed togethe r for awhile. "The Kimber women were the first· women to enter the valley. Grandfather Kimber'was ordained Bishop of the Grouse Creek Ward 15 September 1880. He served in th1,.s capacity for fifteen years and eve.n though he lived twelve miles from the church house and had to travel by team.or horseback he was always at his post. Everyone who knew him loved him. Their home was run in an orderly :fashion and was always kept ne·at and clean. Grandmother always had currant buns for the grandchildren when they came to visit. She always wore a lace cap. At one time when going home from church in a spring' wagon he and grand, mother were riding in the back seat, the wagon hit a chuck, the seat fell off tip'p ing them out of the wagon. Grandfather was hurt in the neck or shoulder and ever after he carried his head on one side.
