They were attracted by the natural meadows. The first settlers established several small towns in the area including Etna and Grouse Creek. In 1878 the residents built a tithing granary which was used for the school. In 1884 the school district was organized. The school that is used today was built in 1912 and it has been added on to several times. A history written in 1917 described the building as "a four room school house which was built of pressed sandstone at a cost of about nine thousand dollars by the county school board."
