Subject Higher cortical dysfunction; Neuro-ophthalmology; Posterior cortical atrophy syndrome
Description This report highlights a patient with visual impairment due to higher cortical dysfunction. A 57-year-old male was referred to a neuro-ophthalmologist by his comprehensive ophthalmologist for evaluation of decreased best-corrected visual acuity, blurry vision, and difficulty reading. Patient was found to have poor color perception, stereopsis, and visual field defect, suggesting higher cortical dysfunction. He further completed an evaluation with a neurologist and a clinical diagnosis of posterior cortical atrophy syndrome was made. Neurodegenerative disease can present with visual symptoms. Neuro-Ophthalmologists play an important role in the initial diagnosis of patients with higher cortical dysfunction.
