The house was built shortly after Isaac Sears moved his family to this area of Farmington. Most likely it was built in 1908. ~ The original house had a 26' x 17' front room, a small kitchen and one bedroom. It also had a small front porch, facing 200 West ~.'1 ~tr~t--r While Ray Steed owned the home, a back porch was added. Later this porch was converted into two small bedrooms and a bathroom. Sometime while Ray Steed owned the house, a bathroom off the main bedroom was added. This house has a paJaal basement with furnace and coal shoot. In the 1970's a wooden garage was removed from the property. ¥ Architect/Builder: Date of Construction: 1 9 0 8 Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with "s" or "c" (S = significant, C = contributing) . At the same time, Isaac Sears bought the Timothy Baldwin Clark home next door at 208 West State Street. Isaac Sears lived next door, with his-first wife Sarah Jane Sears until hi s death __ ir'L 19 J 2 . :. _~ Isaac Sears had three wifes. He married Sarah Jane Sears in September 26, 1867; Lovisa Eldora Sears in April 27, 1882 and Alice Norris Sears in February 14, 1889. 6 Isaac Sears owned a salt factory with partnership with MacKegg and James MelIus. The pioneers used to gather up buckets of salt from the ground around the shores of the Great Salt Lake. They would boil this salt and skim it to obtain the necessary salt for cooking, etc. They piped water to make ponds at the lake. The water evaporated; then they packed the salt and shipped it -to New York. They also gathered salt from the lake shores and freighted it by wagons to the mining areas in Navada and Montana.~ Lovisa Eldora Sears died~n September 20, 1912 and the home was rented until 1922. By court order, it was awarded to her sons Clarence E. Sears and Parley R. Sears. In the book "My Farmington", page 281, it tells a story about a little girl, Estella Hawk who lived at 33 North 200 West before the Sears family sold the property to Ray and Lou Steed . .1 Joseph Hadfield received the land where this house is located from Hector G. height in 1870. He owned the land until his death in 1897. Simon Bamberger owned the land until he sold it to Sarah Jane Sears, the first wife of Isaac Sears in 1907. She then deeded it to the second wife Lovisa Eldora (Continued) Sears. The Court granted the house and land to Clarence E. Sears and Parley R. Sears. They sold it to Ray Steed in 1922. Ray Steed sold the property to August Larry Jung in 1970. a I SECTION ·z I- :r: I- a: o 0... Lewis Edward and Jed Abbott had mines on the north side of Steed Canyon, near the head of Hornet Creek, and did prospecting near the top of the mountains near "Little Lake." Shoemakers - Cobblers Some of the first shoes were made of home-tanned hides, waxed cottoli thread and wooden pegs on a home-made last. James R. Millard made shoeS in his home. John S. Jonathan Holmes was another cobbler. His shop was by Glover's lahe Silkworms· Textiles The silk industry was begun in Farmington in 1870 by Lorinda Robinsod wife of Bishop Joseph Lee Robinson. She was assisted by her daughteiJ Josephine Robinson Rose, wife of Rastus Rose, who lived a block or so sontn of the church, 142 N. Main, in the home later known as the home of HoraC!l and Anne Welling and sons, Adam and Neil . . There was a large forest of Mulberry trees planted where Burke llIlDI is, and was called "Mulberry Patch." There were also some along thea walk west of the rock church. Sister Robinson had two rooms for her wOJllllll with four shelves about 30 inches wide. She wouid lay clean newspa~ all the shelves and place tiny little worms all over the paper. She had to gatDII leaves from the Mulberry trees every few days to sprinkle over the to the worms. I (Margaret Steed) used to help gather leaves for them. . . would eat their way to the top of the leaves and devour everything in " Then it was time to start all over again with clean newspapers; then w and more Mulberry leaves. You could just watch them grow! They get so large and ugly that I just couldn't touch them. Sister Josephine' would pick them off the floor, but I wouldn't.
