Researcher/Organization: Beatrice Lufkin I Farmington City Historic Preservation Commission Date: 2009 4 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Building Stylerrype: No. Stories: Classical, vernacular / Hall-parlor Foundation Material: Additions: ~none 121 West 600 North, Farmington, UT p. 2 stone/none Wall Material(s) : 1 .:.-...---=------ stone ----------------------------Alterations: _none------------------------------_minor _major (describe below) _major (describe below) ~minor Number ofassociated outbuildings _ _ and/or structures __. Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The HaightlHinman House is a Classical style hall-parlor type single story stone residence built c. 1867. 1 It is the archetypical early Utah house and its stone construction connects it to the Farmington area. It is set facing the state highway (also 600 North) to the north. A partial width rear (south) addition with porch as well as the chimney(si have been removed. It has a three-bay relatively symmetrical fa~ade and two unequal-sized rooms. The form is side-gabled with a shingled roof and close eaves. The hall-parlor was one of the most popular house forms in the second half of the nineteenth century in Utah. It stems from a house type found in England and is characteristically two rooms wide and one room deep. There were various forms of rearward extensions to the hall-parlor type house to provide added living space. As in this example, the form is frequently associated with Classical styles. Classical styles are rooted in eighteenth century American Classicism and characterized by rectangular symmetrical facades, central doors and smooth elevations. The style was popular in the Midwest in the 1830s and 1840s and was brought to Utah by the early settlers. It was the dominant architectural style in early Utah from 1847-1890.3 The stone masonry of the walls is set in a random (uncoursed) rubble pattern with slightly raised mortar joints and relatively smooth wall surfaces. The stones are of unequal sizes and shapes. Doors and windows are all modem era replacements. The north elevation (fa~ade) has three bays and a central door. The window opening to the west is vertical and that on the east is larger and horizontal. Both currently have aluminum slider windows. The door opening shows the depth of the north wall and has a single glazed panel. It is protected by an aluminum screen/storm door. The gable-end east elevation has no openings and its defining feature is the strong wooden cornice at the roofline. The west gable-end has two unequal-sized windows. The window to the south is set high on the wall and has wooden sash and lintel. The window to the north is in a larger horizontal opening and currently has an aluminum slider. The south elevation had a partial-width addition/porch that has been removed. The openings are currently covered with OSB. The interior has been modified from its initial two-room configuration by subdividing the west room with an eastwest wall into two rooms. The south addition has been removed but the two interior door openings leading south are visible. All interior walls are smooth plastered, currently damaged by water, etc. The HaightlHinman House is set below the current road surface of 600 North just to the east of Farmington Creek. The immediate surrounding land area has mature deciduous trees, rose hips, native grasses and remnants of domestic flower gardens with iris, etc. The property is now part of a larger parcel (8.677 acres) and 4 presumably subject to plans for redevelopment or demolition. Hess, My Farmington, p. 20. Most likely two, one at either gable end, or a more central one. Only one on the east gable end is visible in the photo in Hess, above. 3 Carter and Goss, Utah's Historic Architecture, 1847-1940: a Guide, p. 95 . .. Haight (1810-1879) was the:first European to settle in the Farmington area and is known as ''the founding father ofFarmington.,,7 He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints8 after moving to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1845. Haight crossed the plains with the early pioneers, arriving in Salt Lake City in September of 1847, and the following year herding and settling at Haight Creek.9 He was involved with his church, serving a proselytizing mission to Denmark from 1855 to 1858 and another to the "States" in 1876. 10 He was the president of the Scandinavian Mission from 1856 to 1858. 11 Haight was active politically, serving as Probate Judge for many years as well as assessor, tax collector and sheriff. In the current LDS practice of the time, he had several polygamous marriages, marrying Julia Van Orden (1811- 69) in 1829, Catherine WilerlWeiler in 1854 and Margaret Jane Stewart in 1870. 12 He was also a farmer, blacksmith, stock raiser and hotel proprietor. Haight built several buildings in the Farmington area. Currently known ones include the c. 1850 house at Blooming Grove near Haight Creek, the two-story Union Hotel at 208 N. Main Street in 1857 (National Register listed), this rock house in c. 1867, and another small rock house just to the west of this house at 145 West 600 North three years later in c. 1870. 13 In 1870 Haight deeded the property containing this stone cabin and other property (a total of 31 acres) to Thomas Grover. Thomas Grover (1807-1886) was born in New York and also a convert to the LDS church. He lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, before coming to Utah in 1847. He had six polygamous wives; Carline Whiting whom he married in Vermont in 1828; Caroline Eliza Nickerson in Nauvoo in 1841; Hannah Tupper in Nauvoo in 1844; LaduskaILoduska Salome Tupper, also in Nauvoo in 1846; Emma Walker in Salt Lake City in 1856 and Elizabeth Walker, also in Salt Lake City, in 1857. 14 He ran an inn on Main Street in Farmington (now the LDS church parking lot). Joel Grover (1849-1886) one of his sons from his wife, Hannah Tupper, was born in Farmington and moved to Nephi in Juab County in 1871. Joel Grover sold the house to Judson L. Stoddard in 1872. s Hess, p.20. He was a native Canadian and also a polygamist. He married Rhoda Chase in 1845 in Nauvoo, Sylvia Chase (18191865) in 1851, and Mary Louise Barnard in 1853, both in Salt Lake City. M.L. and H.L Hinman purchased the property in 1875 and it remained in the Hinman family until Elizabeth C. Hinman sold it in 1896. The Hinman family lived in the house. Morgan Lewis (18311891) and Henry Lyman (1837-1921) were sons of Lyman Hinman (1794-1864), the millwright, and built several mills in Farmington with their father. The brothers were born in Massachusetts and came to Utah with their family. Henry Lyman Hinman married Elizabeth Harriet Compton (1840-1912) in 1861 and Mary Jane White (1853-19l3) in 1874. Elizabeth was born in Illinois and came to Salt Lake City with her parents in 1859. In 1880 Henry and Elizabeth were living together with their five children in Farmington while Henry was working as a farmer. 15 In 1887 Henry moved to Canada and his second polygamous wife, Mary Kane Hinman, followed in 1890. Thet' both died in Cardston, Alberta. Elizabeth C. Hinman remained in Farmington until her death. 1 Silas H. Carol owned the property from 1896 to 1900 and Edward M(arcellas) Preece (1856-1924) from 1900 to 1901. Nephi J. Hayes (1843 17_1926) received title to the property in 1901. He was born in Nauvoo, Illinois, and came to Salt Lake City, Utah as a child in 1851. He lived briefly in Farmington before moving to Bear Lake County in Idaho in 1868 where he was one of the early European settlers. He and Eliza Wright (1853-1938), an English immigrant, married in 1874 in Salt Lake City. They returned to Farmington in 1903 and lived there until their deaths. In 1920 they were living together at 65 and 75 years of age at this house on the State Highway. IS After Eliza Hayes' death in 1938, the property was sold in 1940 to Irene B. Mayfield. Jack I. and Irene B. Mayfield Olsen lived in the house in the second half of the twentieth century. 19 After Irene B. Mayfield Olsen's death, the property was sold in 2006 to Bradley and Dee Ann Palmer. The property was titled to Palmer Estates, LLC in 2007. 1880 Tenth u.s. Census. Arrived with her parents in Salt Lake City, October 3, 1859, going directly to North Farmington. They built up the property known as Compton Bench, but lost their holdings when alternate sections became a federal land grant to the railroad and it sold ·the property- to others. Courtship came to Elizabeth when she met Henry L. Hinman. Recreation during their courtship days was of a home-made type. The . young people would meet at each others homes, crack black walnuts, pop corn, make molasses candy or sugar taffy flavored with horehound, or they ate apples and doughnuts. While one of the young men read aloud, the girls might crochet or embroider. Elizabeth was one of the 276 EAST OF ANTELOPE ISLAND three best with the needle-especially popular at quilting bees and when there were difficult buttonholes to · embroider. Her drawings, made on carefully pressed brown paper, were interesting to the group. She would copy them for her embroidery designs and they were often flowers, leaves, wild grapes, and berries like those which grew in her beloved Missouri woods of childhood days. After marriage, when they visited friends in Salt · Lake, it usually meant taking the family and remaining a week. Judge Alexander Pyper's family were making such a visit with the Hinmans when word came that President Brigham Young was dead. Sister Pyper began packing her things in all haste saying, "Oh, what will we do now?" The Pypers were capital entertainers. Elizabeth's grand-chiJdren remember that when Pypers were visiting the Hinmans-together with the Hinman hospitality-there was much jollity. In winter time there were always pits of the best pearmane apples anyone ever ate; also the pop-corn which was popped in plenty of butter in a large iron kettle. . As Marshal of the Day, her husband, Henry, led the parade on the Fourth of July. Mounted on. his coal black "Prince," wearing beaver hat and plume, he did credjt to the father of our country. Her daughter, Mary Hinman Seal, remembers watching "Uncle Morg" construct the sails for the boat which carried passengers and cargo between Farmington and Antelope Island. She and her husband engaged in all the pioneer pursuits which made Utah pioneers self-sufficient, including salt from Great Salt Lake, ground in the coffee mill, spinning one's own yarn for stock'ings for the entire family or for weaving into cloth to be made into suits and dresses for the family, also; the sheep were raised on the HinIllan farm. There was also .machine-made link sausage, and jerked venison kept on top of the kitchen cabinet; her husband made most everything, from a hardwood rolling pin to the home in which they lived. He secured hard, wood and soft from his own homestead on the banks of Big Creek. . Simon Bamberger purchased the valuable spring of water which had done long 'service in the Hinman Illilk-house, and piped it to his Lagoon Resort. Ever since her marriage; she had a home at Farming~ ton where eh~ died at the age 72 at the home of her daughter Mrs. "Katie" Knowlton. . -Lizzie Knowlton Maughan and Lima Seal Hunsaker.
