Researcher/Organization: Beatrice Lufkin / Farmington City Historic Preservation Commission Date: June 2010 4 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION 68 West 100 North, Farmington, UT p. 2 Building Style/Type: Victorian Eclectic / Central block with projecting bay Foundation Material: Additions: fieldstone, concrete (addition) none x minor major (describe below) Number of associated outbuildings 1 and/or structures No. Stories: Wall Material(s): Alterations: 1 1/2 vinyl siding none x minor major (describe below) . Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The one-and-a-half story Robinson/Richards House at 68 West 100 North, Farmington, was built in 1902 in the Victorian Eclectic style. It is a central block with projecting bay type house with a variety of roof types including gabled, hipped and shed. Victorian Eclectic styles were popular in Utah from 1880-1910, particularly for residential construction. Typical characteristics of the style, visible in this example, include the asymmetrical façade, the visual complexity in its irregularity of form, the leaded glass transoms and the projecting bay. The dominant feature of the façade is the gable-roofed three-sided projecting bay with a pent roof and wooden decorative Queen-Anne style corner brackets (Photo #8). Window openings on the façade have arched panels with scrollwork overhead (Photo # 9). There are three large fixed pane windows with leaded stained glass transom windows. The side windows in the projecting bay are one-over-one double-hung with wooden sash. Window openings are covered with aluminum storm windows. The hip-roofed open porch wraps around the house on the south and east elevations. The north elevation has two doors (Photo #3). One opens down to the basement and the other, up a flight of concrete steps, leads up to an open porch with decorative metal supports. This section has the fieldstone foundation. The hip-roofed roof dormers are visible on the north elevation. At an unknown date a shed-roofed small addition (Photo # 6) was constructed on the southwest corner of the house over a concrete foundation. Other changes include enveloping the house in vinyl siding, changing the roof supports on the rear to mid-twentieth century metal, and replacing the chimney with modern red brick. The porch knee wall was faced with sandstone. Various windows and doors have been replaced with modern materials and an attic-level openings on a side elevation has been changed. The windows and doors are covered with OSB in the rear (north) and side (east) elevations. The only outbuilding is a front-gabled two-car garage (Photo # 7) located at the end of the driveway leading from 100 North to the northeast side of the house. The garage is constructed of concrete block and covered with vinyl siding on the south and west elevations to match the house. It has two jointed vinyl overhead doors and a window on the east side. The house is located on the north side of 100 North, a quiet residential street with a variety of house types and styles. The lot has lawn, shrubbery, roses, and mature trees. The property is currently vacant and showing signs of deferred maintenance and repair. Loose roof shingles have blown onto the lawn, the shrubbery is overgrown, vinyl siding panels are loose, and some of the attic level windows are open. In spite of the addition of vinyl siding, the essential form of the Victorian Eclectic house is visible. Its architectural details such as corner brackets, leaded stained glass windows, transoms and arched detailed window openings are still visible on the facade. The Robinson/Richards House retains its historic integrity and would be a contributing/eligible building in a potential historic district. 5 HISTORY Architect/Builder: 68 West 100 North, Farmington, UT p. 3 unknown Date of Construction: 1902 Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with "S" or "C" (S = significant, C = contributing). James Henry Robinson (1865-1954) was born in Farmington to parents who immigrated to Farmington from New York and Illinois. He married Romaine Chaffin (1866-1943), also a Farmington native, in 1889. Robinson ran a mercantile business for more than forty years, retiring in 1943. In 1880 the census noted that he was working on a farm at age 14. In later life he continued this interest and farmed as an avocation. He was also active in local government, serving two terms as mayor (1904-1908) and two on the city council. He was the first marshall for the city of Farmington. He also served on the Davis County Board of Education and was a charter member of the Commercial Club of Farmington. The Robinsons were both were active in the LDS church with various offices and callings. The U. S. Population Census displays several data snapshots of the Robinson family. The 1900 census shows them living with six children, aged from 2 to 9, while James H. was superintendant at a “mercantile establishment.” There were nine children by the time of the 1910 census, aged 1 to 19. By 1920 only six children, aged 10 to 21, were living with the Robinsons. Two of the sons at that point worked outside the home – one as a missionary and the other in a green house. After Romaine Chaffin Robinson’s death in 1943, James H. Robinson sold the house to the Richards. The Richards married in 1942 and soon after purchased this property in 1943. Rulon Moroni Richards (1907-1985) and his wife, Golda Larsen (1907-1995), were both University of Utah graduates and taught school. Rulon Richard taught for forty-one years and Golda Larsen for thirty-two years. Rulon Richards was a native of Farmington and a lifetime Davis County resident. He enjoyed gardening and dairy farming. Golda Larsen was a native of Moab, Grand County, and affiliated with Delta Kappa Gamma. She taught in both Salt Lake and Davis Counties. Both Richards were active in the LDS church. C. Vaughn and his wife, Carolee B., Carter purchased the house in 1986 and held it for eight years. Davis and Lori Scott bought it in 1994 and sold in 2001 to the current owner, Davkris Investment Company. 1 LDS or Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 6 PHOTOS Common Label Information: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 68 West 100 North Farmington, Davis County, Utah Photographer: Beatrice Lufkin Date: June 2010 Digital color photographs on file at Utah SHPO.
