Originally built as a theatre, this building retains the original exterior walls which were raised in height during remodeling in 1937 following a fire. The building consists of two Bays on the main floor and an open upper level which extends approxi~tely 2/3 the length of the building. These changes were effected during remodeling which occurred about 1950. The main facade has been altered from the original theatre facade and has been covered by tile, stucco, and wood. 5. Architect/Builder: Unknown/ John Stahle Sr. Date of Construction: Ca. 1923 Write a chronological history of the property, focusing primarily on the original or principal owners & significant events. At the time this property was purchased by John Stahle Sr. in 1915, the site contained a structure shown on a 1917 Sanborn map as a confectionery. This original building gave way to a brick theatre/showhouse around 1923 built by John Stahle. John's wife, Cora, was highly involved in the operation of the showhouse in which many productions including children's plays and silent movies were shown. Cora received musical training at the Juliard School of Music and used these talents in the production of the plays and for the background music of silent movies. The original building contained a stage, orchestra pit, a sloped floor for seating, and a projection booth. In 1937 the building was gutted by fire and eventually sold by the Stahle family. The theatre was rebuilt with a more steeply sloped seating floor. The height of the building was also changed during this re-construction. This change is made apparent by the change in brick color on the side elevation of .the building. The theatre ceased operations in the late 1940's and the building was converted to commercial retail space. An upper floor was added at this time and the main facade of the building was altered to its present configuration. It is currently occupied by Lee's Barber Shop and Sports Specialties, a sporting goods store. .-. -- :.
