Fourteenth Census, Utah, Enumeration District 88, Sheet 3B, Lines 98-100, accessed online at www.censusonline.org on June 9, 2009. Researcher/Organization: Sheri Murray Ellis, Ellen W. Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary: The historical building at 1455 South Edison Street is a 2-story Victorian Eclectic Side Passage residence. The building has a typical Side Passage plan with a front-gable roof, overall rectangular footprint, and primary entry in the north end of the main fa~ade. The building is adorned with two-tone wood shingles in a fishscale pattern, four brick stringcourses, including one in a denticulated pattern, has a sandstone elliptical arch lintel with carved foliation over one of the windows in the in main elevation, and has a prominent two-story front porch. The building is clad in regular brick but has wood shingle siding and stucco in the gable ends. As noted, the roof is a front-gable structure with the gable walls facing the frontage road and back yard. The roof is steeply pitched and has narrow, enclosed eaves. The building rests on a sandstone block foundation . It is unclear if the building has a basement level. The west elevation is the primary fa~ade, and the 2-story porch is most prominent feature. The first story of the porch has a boxed porch cover reminiscent of a Mansard style roof. The cover is supported by pairs of colonettes and the stoop itself is concrete rather than stone, as is the foundation of the residence. Some time after the house was constructed the bottom edge of the porch cover was extended and flared, presumably to move the drip line further from the porch landing. The porch cover is clad in wood shingles in a combination offishscale (on the original part ofthe cover) and spear patterns, and there are decorative brackets extending from the wooden colonettes that support the cover to the base of the cover. The top of the porch cover is flat, and it serves as the balcony for the second story doorway, which is aligned directly over the lower doorway. Historical photos of the property indicate that the upper balcony consisted only of the landing and that no railing or cover was present. A gabled cover and wooden railing were added later, and the cover supports were crafted to duplicate the colonettes of the lower porch. Two window openings are present in the primary fa~ade. Both are located in the southern end ofthe elevation and are arranged with one in the first story wall and one directly above it in the second story wall. The lower opening has an elliptical arch header and a decorative sandstone elliptical arch drip mold. The window sill is composed of sandstone, and the window is a l-over-l single-hung window with an arched upper light. This window appears to be a more recent replica of the historical window. The upper window opening holds a couplet of wood-framed single-hung windows. These do not appear to be the original windows but do replicate the historical windows. This window opening also has a sandstone sill. Windows in the side and rear elevations consist of combination of wood-framed l-over-l single-hung and fixed sash windows, as well as occasional aluminum-framed windows. Window couplets similar to those on the primary fa~ade are duplicated in the other elevations. A single brick chimney is present in the bUilding. It is located near the western end of the southern elevation. A secondary entry to the residence is located in the eastern (rear) elevation. One outbuilding, a garage built ca. 1919, is present on the property behind the residence and is accessed by a mid-block alley. Undated Tax Assessment Photos 1455 S. County tax records indicate the residence was constructed in 1909; however, the architectural character of the building and historical maps of the lot suggest it was constructed earlier than that, probably in the 1890s. The chain of title records indicates that Bella and William H. Hodges were likely the first owners of the residence. Information obtained by the Salt Lake City Planning Commission suggests that the residence was constructed on speculation around 1893 by John A. Fritsch (Salt Lake City 1981), a real estate developer active in subdivision platting and development in Liberty Wells in the 1890s, after the Big Field 5-acre Plat was subdivided into smaller residential blocks and lots. Hodges, a dentist, lived in the home for several years before turning it into a rental property (Salt Lake City 1981). In 1906, Hodges sold the property to William Bradford (Book of Abstracts B-20, pg. 159). Bradford, who was an elementary school principal and previously owned a home only a few doors south of the Hodges house (U.S . Census Bureau 1920; Salt Lake City 1981), retained the property until 1925, when a decree of distribution was recorded . The decree was issued by a district court in the matter of the estate of William Bradford (deceased in 1924) and awarded one-eighth interest in the property to each of 8 of Bradford's children (Book of Abstracts S-17, pg. 165). Later that year, the Bradford children sold the residence to Gaskell and Vernon Romney (Book of Abstracts S-17, pg. 165). Gaskell and Amy Pratt Romney transferred their share of the property to Vernon Romney via a quit claim deed in 1928 (Book of Abstracts S-17, pg. 166). Vernon Romney retained the property until 1934, when he sold it to Raymond E. and Dora A. Davidson (Book of Abstracts S-26, pg. 126). In 1940, the Davidsons sold the residence to Burton Lumber and Hardware Company (Book of Abstracts S-26, pg. 136), who transferred title to it to G. Taylor and Hilqa H. Burton in 1942 (Book of Abstracts S-26, pg. 136). The Burtons sold the property to G. Stewart and Erma S. Horsley later that year (Book of Abstracts S-26, pg. 136). The Horsley family retained the property until 1977, when they sold it to Ralph D. and Barbara H. Fisher (Book of Abstracts S-99, pg. 61B). In 1989, Ralph D. Fisher sold the property to James Belnap (Microfiche Abstracts 6175, pg. 1878), who immediately resold it (through his attorney) to Rod C. Jackson (Microfiche Abstracts 6175, pg. 1880). Jackson sold the residence it to Gloria 1. Berthold in 1996 (Digital Abstracts 7427, pg. 668), and in 2004, Berthold, then using what is presumed to be her married name, Vannoy, sold the residence to the current owner, Jennifer L. Bakken (Digital Abstracts 8941 , pg. 7263). TITLE SEARCH FORM [Obtain information from title abstract books at County Recorder's Office] Address: 11155 f~ 0 (\ .s t . City: Salt LAKe...
