Referral Patterns to Neuro-Ophthalmology for Presumptive Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) Based on Isolated Neuroimaging Findings

Radiologic findings of intracranial hypertension (RAD-IH) are common in IIH patients. Paralleling the increasing rates of obesity, the burden of IIH is growing. Requests for urgent neuro-ophthalmology consultation for "IIH?" in patients incidentally detected to have RAD-IH are increasing, with many patients receiving unnecessary lumbar punctures (LP) and treatments. This retrospective observational study aims to determine the prevalence of neuro-ophthalmology consultations for incidentally-found RAD-IH and its implications in one tertiary neuro-ophthalmology clinic.
