Kim Martinez, & Skip Huntress DIVERSITY Everyone has a need to belong It's just our job to accept each other, To feel good about who we are. And to do our best to understand. No one has the right to judge To put ourselves in their shoes, And others' character try to mar. And to look at it on the other hand. We know not what makes others tick, To appreciate the differences; How they think inside their minds. Like a puzzle, we all fit in It's hard enough to know ourselves, As the colors of the rainbow, And it's endless we soon find. We are all kith and kin. We never know the kind of raisin' Everyone has a contribution, that they did or did not get. No matter how great or small. We might not know their fears and woes, If we see the mix and honor it, Or know the things that make them fret. Harmony will embrace us all. Harmony Will Embrace Us All is a neighborhood project funded by the Utah Humanities Council, The Northwest Merchant's Association, Dan Stanger , the Sate Fairpark Community Council, and Prowswood inc. May 1995 Salt Lake City, Utah Wm. Scot Baraclough 2 3 Dear Friends, Dear Friends, Thank you for taking the time to share with us in this book of Fairpark histories and comments. We have tried to make a cross-cut collection of histories and facts about our neighborhood that we hope you will find interesting. Since our neighborhood is one of the oldest and the most ethnically diverse in the state, we feel that we have a lot of reasons to be proud. The purpose of our book is to help each one of us understand and get to know our neighbors. We think that by knowing our history and our neighbors, it will help us to develop more pride in who and what we are. We also think that by knowing each other, the bridge of understanding will be that much easier to cross. While we may share differences culturally, ethnically, religiously and many other ways, we have much more commonality. We all have the desire to have nice homes and yards, good food to eat, a feeling of security, and a sense of belonging. We truly hope that this book will encourage us all to know, understand and accept each other as neighbors and friends. May we help each other achieve our dreams and desires. It is often said that rebuilding a neighborhood through bricks and mortar can physically change the perception of a neighborhood's appearance, but the true change in a neighborhood comes from the people who live in the neighborhood. It is an honor for NHS to be a part of the partnership that came together to celebrate the greatness of the Guadalupe, Jackson and Onequa neighborhoods. While we may know who our neighbors are, it's when we learn their life story or learn something special about them, that we see them differently ... they have shared a part of their lives with us and become a part of our own history. Many thanks to our friends who shared a part of their lives with us and have became a part of our own history. Many thanks to our friends who shared their history, the volunteers, staff and contributors who made this project happen ... it has been a true labor of love ... Diversity ... Harmony will embrace us all - a collection from Onequa, Jackson, and Guadalupe with pride is the result of people celebrating differences. Scot Barraclough LINC Resident Advisor Committee 4 Maria Garciaz Executive Director NHS 5 Dear Neighbor, Dear Neighbor, I want you all to know that I take pride in being your representative at City Hall. Thank you for your continued trust and support. Because of your participation and support, we have gained the respect and admiration of the Mayor and the City Council. City government is very aware of our presence, and that new awareness is making a difference in how it responds to our longstanding needs. Together we will continue to make improvements that will impact our community in the present and for the generations that will follow us. This work is the culmination of a project which started over six months ago. In October, 1994, a group of residents in connection with Neighborhood Housing Services Inc. 's Project LINC talked with some of our neighborhoods to learn how they felt about living in the State Fairpark community. The project LINC participants found that as a whole the people of this part of Salt Lake City like living here and are satisfied with our quality of life. As a result, they decided to create this work as a celebration of our neighborhoods and heritage as one of the first areas settled by the Mormon Pioneers after their arrival in the Salt Lake Valley in July 1847. If we are going to continue to win the battles at City Hall, we need to become even more unified and more active. I encourage all residents to participate in their community council. It is vital that your voices be heard in city government. The more people that we have attend community council meetings the more influence we have on city government. There is strength in numbers and our unified strengths will make a difference. Please feel, that no matter your race, religion, or ethnic background, you should feel a part of this community and you should actively participate in resolving the challenges existing in our neighborhoods. The project LINC team has interviewed thirty residents of the State Fairpark neighborhood, endeavoring to get a nice cross-section of people, young to old, various ethnic groups, long-time residents and new comers; and representatives from different churches, schools. and local businesses. Accompanying the interviews are beautiful photographs of the resident as well as neighborhood landmarks. Also included is research about the State Fairpark and the Donner Party. Your Council member, As the State Fairpark Community Council Chairperson, I would like to express our collective appreciation tho the project LINC team, Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc., the interviewees, and also those who donated time and/or money to make this work possible. It will help to show Salt Lake City and the State of Utah not only what a great community we live in, but also what great residents make up our neighborhood! Stuart C. Reid Chairman, Salt Lake City Council Russ Jacobsen We have a great community and we should feel proud to be a part of it. We still have much to do to make it even better. With your active support, we can accomplish everything that needs to be done to make our community the best it can be. 6 |
