Description |
The term 'functional' was in fairly common use in medical literature by the 1820s-1830s to denote clinical presentations of symptoms and signs that were thought to arise from a 'change in mode of action' (i.e., alteration in functioning) of an organ system unrelated to the direct effects of structural lesions. Neurologic textbooks through the end of the 1800s included illnesses such as epilepsy, paralysis agitans, alcoholism, and migraine among functional disorders. |
