Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Henry and Marie Standish House is a one-story brick bungalow built in 1923. 1 It is located at 1064 E. Norris Place in Salt Lake City.2 The house is built on a concrete foundation. The walls are built of clinker brick laid in a running bond with raked mortar joints. The house has a rectangular footprint measuring 25 by 36 feet with the narrower end facing the street. The most dramatic alteration to the house has been the removal of the clinker brick porch piers and railing wall. The porch was replaced with square wood columns and a square-post balustrade (circa 1995). Although the style of the replacement porch is compatible with the bungalow period, the change has a great impact on the architectural character of a modest bungalow. The main roof is hipped with a miniature gablet at the front. There is a secondary hipped roof extending over the porch, which appears to be the same configuration as the original. The porch steps still face east. The roof is covered in asphalt shingles. The soffits and fascia have been replaced (circa 1995). The regular brick is red and the clinker brick is more purplish. The contrasting concrete and woodwork have been painted light blue and white. The front door is slightly offcenter and is flanked by two picture windows with rowlock brick sills. The secondary windows include a combination of narrow and square windows. There are small square basement windows on the east and west elevations. The rear (south elevation) has an enclosed porch at the southeast comer. The enclosure is sheathed with vertical siding, painted blue. On the interior, the house has 900 square feet of space on the main floor and 675 square feet of space in the mostly finished basement. The house has a total of eight rooms with four bedrooms and two baths. The house sits on a rectangular parcel of 0.07 acres facing Norris Place. The front yard is shallow and completely paved with brick. There is a mature tree near the northwest comer of the house. The driveway is on the east side of the house. It is concrete strips with brick pavers between. The rear yard is fenced with wood. A wood fence on a concrete retaining wall is on the south (rear) property line. There are currently no outbuildings associated with this property, though there was an older garage on the property until the 1970s or 1980s. The immediate neighborhood of the Standish House includes mostly brick and frame residences built primarily between 1890 and 1930. The area is in the southeast quadrant of the Bryant Neighborhood and is surrounded by a residential mix of styles and types, mostly built in the early 1900s. The neighborhood also includes a few neighborhood-scale commercial and office buildings, three neighborhood churches, and the Holy Cross Hospital complex. 3 A large portion of the inner block is used by the Salt Lake Senior Center at 237 S. 1000 East. Several of the Norris Place houses border a pocket park behind the senior center. The Standish House was evaluated as eligible/contributing when the Bryant Neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as part of a boundary increase for the Central City Historic District in 2001. The building was constructed within the historic period, defined as 1870 to 1946 in the Bryant Neighborhood nomination. The historic district was expanded a second time in 2002 and the buildings are currently part of the NRHP Salt Lake City East Side Historic District. However, the building has subsequently had a major alteration with the removal of the porch and would likely no longer be considered eligible for the National Register as part of an updated or amended nomination. It no longer retains its historic integrity, but may still have important local historic significance. The building has been evaluated as ineligible for the purposes of this site form. 1 The tax cards give an estimated date of 1919, but the building permit is dated 1923, which is a better estimate. Place was developed as an inner-block court beginning in 1914. The street was also known as Norris Court or Norris Avenue. 2 Norris 3 The three churches are the St. Paul's Episcopal Church (261 S. 900 East), LDS Church 11th Ward Meetinghouse (951 E. 100 South) and the LDS Church 33rd Ward Meetinghouse (451 S. 1100 East). The latter is within the University Historic District neighborhood. The Holy Cross Hospital is currently known as the Salt Lake Regional Medical Center. Plat F was surveyed in 1867 as an eastern expansion of the city's second survey, Plat B, which was platted in 1848, a year after the arrival of Mormon settlers. 4 Plat F has the same characteristics as the earlier plats: ten-acre blocks, each containing eight lots of 1Y4 acres. Streets were 132 feet wide. Originally each lot was allowed the construction of one house with a standard setback of 20 feet. The rear of the property was to be used for vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and outbuildings for subsistence livestock and poultry.s Plat B ended at 1000 East where the foothills begin to rise. The settlers were organized into wards, with the north part of the Bryant Neighborhood part of the Eleventh Ward. 6 Plat F developed later and more slowly due to the steep topography, but became a fashionable neighborhood after the University of Utah was moved from its downtown location to former Fort Douglas land above 1300 East in 1899-1900.7 Because of the rapid growth of Salt Lake City in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the semi-rural lots were subdivided and the neighborhood became more urban in character. Around the edges of the blocks, the modest homes of the first settlers were joined by the more substantial homes of the emerging middle-class, particularly in the first quarter of the twentieth century. Inner-block courts such as Markea Avenue and Norris Place were developed beginning in the 1900s. Multi-family housing for the working-class began to appear in the early 1900s. The neighborhood was easily accessible to the downtown and the University by a streetcar line along South Temple. The significance of the Standish House falls within the contextual period Mature Community, 1900-1925 as described in the Bryant Neighborhood nomination. 8 The Standish House represents the development of Norris Place as a bungalow court for the working class. The land at 1064 E. Norris Place was part of a larger parcel (Lot 7) deeded to David Norris by the mayor of Salt Lake City in 1874. David Norris (1838-1887) was a Scottish immigrant. David and his wife, Susannah Norris, built a brick house at 234 S. 1100 East. Susannah Manning Norris (1845-1914) was born in England. They were married in Salt Lake City in 1867 and had ten children. The north half of Lot 7 was sold to a widow, Eliza D. Carson, who built a house at 226 S. 1100 East. After Susannah Norris's death in April 1914, the family subdivided the south half of Lot 7 and developed the south side of Norris Place. About two years later, Edna and Freeman Morningstar acquired and subdivided the Carson property. They developed the north side of Norris Place to match the parcels on the south side. In May 1914, Susannah Norris' property was subdivided into eight parcels, with each of her surviving seven children receiving one parcel. The extra parcel was held in trust. The older Norris House with frontage on 1100 East was probably demolished in late 1914 or early 1915. The parcel at 1064 E. Norris Place was deeded to John Norris in 1914. John Manning Norris (1870-1929) and his wife, Mary Robina Murphy Norris (1869-1965), sold or traded the parcel to John's sister, Alice Norris Sears (1864-1957), in exchange for her parcel on 11 00 East. The first pennanent settlers of Salt Lake City were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the LDS or Monnon Church. S Brigham Young outlined the design of the city based on a concept known as the "City of Zion" plat originated by LDS Church founder Joseph Smith for laying out the city of Nauvoo, Illinois. Edward W. Tullidge, The History of Salt Lake City and Its Founders, (Salt Lake City, Utah: Edward W. Tullidge, Publisher and Proprietor, 1880),47. 6 A ward (similar to a parish or congregation) is the smallest ecclesiastical unit of the LDS Church. The Bryant Neighborhood also includes part of the Tenth Ward, south of300 South. 7 Julie Osborne, University Historic District, National Register of Historic Places Registration Fonn, 1995. The company obtained a building permit for the address in May 1923, which described a one-story brick residence of five rooms to be built at an estimated cost of $3,000. Herrick & Company was founded by Nelson L. Herrick (1887-1972). He built most of the 1400 East block of Sherman Avenue. He later formed the Gaddis Investment Company with Thomas Eugene Gaddis (1886-1967). The first occupants appear to have been Henry and Marie Standish who were renters from the 1920s to the early 1930s. Henry Nephi Standish (1853-1931) was born in Salt Lake City. Anna Marie NaefLeeman Standing (1859-1935) was born in Switzerland. By the time they lived on Norris Place, they were retired and each on their second marriage. After Henry's death, Marie Standish moved to Los Angeles. The house was a rental for a few years before being purchased by Gamet and Ellen Tolman in 1940. In the 1950s, it was purchased by Ivan and Marguerite Jensen, and later owned by Marguerite and Harold Charon. It was part of a number of parcels in the area purchased by Chan and Naomi Maxfield in the early 1990s. After change hands several times, it was acquired by the current owner in 2007.
