Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Mateer-Woolley House is a two-story neoclassical residence built of brick in 1908-1909. It was designed by Utah architect, Bernard O. Meckienberg. It is located at 250 S. 1000 East in Salt Lake City. I The main block of the house is under a truncated hipped roof, so it could be classified as a foursquare. However, there are several projecting bays, including a round tower, so the central-block-with-projecting-bays type is also accurate. The footprint of the house is roughly rectangular measuring approximately 36 by 52 feet. The most prominent architectural feature is the front porch, which is the full-width of the fa~ade (east elevation) and wraps around the two-story tower at the southeast comer. There are two-story octagonal bays on the north and south elevations. The house is constructed of brick masonry on a rock-face ashlar foundation. Sandstone is also used for the low rail wall flanking the front steps. The red brick is laid in a running bond with flush light-colored mortar joints. The roof is asphalt shingle. The wrapping porch is neoclassical in style with pairs and trios of Tuscan columns supporting the flat roof. The columns support a full entablature with a plain frieze and dentillated cornice. Above the cornice, the eaves are wide with decorative block modillions. A similar pattern of dentillated cornice, modillions and wide eaves is also found on the main roof. A smaller scale version is used on the front dormer. The porch balustrade has heavy lathe-turned posts. The rail and the roof both follow the curve of the tower on the south. A second curve is located at the northeast comer, which helps to visually balance the fa~ade. The front door features leaded-glass sidelights and transoms. The exterior wood is painted white, with the exception of the front door, which is brown. Just above the front door is a frame bay on the second story. The windows are either fixed-frame with leaded-glass transoms (mostly main level) or double-hung. The dormer has a trio of nine-light windows separated by miniature Ionic columns. Colored art glass is found windows on the north elevation (probably lighting the stairs) and a few transoms. The gables on the north and south elevations have cornice returns, shingle in the gable trim, and Palladian style windows. The house has three corbelled brick chimneys with a white wood cornice for accent. There is a covered stoop and back door at the center of the rear (west) elevation. On the interior, the house has 1,669 square feet of space on the main floor, 1,669 square feet on the second floor, and the same amount in the mostly unfinished basement. There are a total of fourteen rooms, including five bedrooms and one bath. There are three fireplaces in the house. The house faces east on a parcel of 0.31 acres. The driveway is on the north side of the house. There is a contributing two-car garage in the rear. The front yard is lawn and has mature trees. The house is one of the very few in the neighborhood with a side yard. There are several mature trees in the side yard. The side and back yards are fenced with chain link. The immediate neighborhood includes one-story brick and frame residences built primarily between 1891 and 1925. The area is in the northeast quadrant of the Bryant Neighborhood and is surrounded by a residential mix of styles and types, mostly built in the early 1900s. The neighborhood also includes a few neighborhood-scale commercial and office buildings, two neighborhood churches, and the Holy Cross Hospital complex. 2 The Mateer-Woolley House was evaluated as eligible/significant when the Bryant Neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as part of a boundary increase for the Central City Historic District in 2001. The historic district was expanded a second time in 2002 and the buildings are currently part of the NRHP Salt Lake City East Side Historic District. The Mateer-Woolley House was built within the historic period of the current NRHP district, defined as 1870 to 1946 in the Bryant Neighborhood nomination. The Mateer-Woolley House is the largest and possibly most architecturally significant residence in the immediate area. It is in good historic condition and makes a significant contribution to the architectural and historical resources of the neighborhood. In historic records until 1972, the street name was more commonly known as Tenth East. The two churches are the LDS Church 11th Ward Meetinghouse (951 E. 100 South) and the St. Paul's Episcopal Church (261 S. 900 East). The Holy Cross Hospital is currently known as the Salt Lake Regional Medical Center. I 2 Architect!Builder: Bernard o. Mecklenberg, architect / J. E. Plat B was surveyed in 1848 as an eastern expansion of the city's first survey, Plat A, which was platted in August 1847 soon after the arrival of Mormon settlers. 3 Plat B had the same characteristics as the first plat: ten-acre blocks, each containing eight lots of 1Y4 acres. Streets were 132 feet wide. Originally each lot was allowed the construction of one house with a standard setback of 20 feet. The rear of the property was to be used for vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and outbuildings for subsistence livestock and poultry.4 The settlers were organized into wards, with the north part of the Bryant Neighborhood part of the Eleventh Ward.s Because of the rapid growth of Salt Lake City in the late nineteenth century, the semi-rural lots were subdivided and the neighborhood became more urban in character. Around the edges of the blocks, the modest homes of the first settlers were joined by the more substantial homes of the emerging middle-class, particularly in the first quarter of the twentieth century. Inner block streets such as Iowa Street were developed beginning in the 1890s. Multi-family housing for the working-class began to appear in the early 1900s. The neighborhood was easily accessible to the downtown and the University by a streetcar line along South Temple. The significance of the Mateer-Woolley House falls within the contextual period, Mature Community, 1900-1925, as described in the Bryant Neighborhood nomination. 6 The Mateer-Woolley House is representative of the substantial homes built by Salt Lake's most prosperous residents in one of its oldest neighborhoods. Between 1888 and 1889, the east half of Block 43, Lot 1, passed from Edward A. Kesler, to John H. & Cinnie Bennett, to John and Bettie Ingram. John Bowen Ingram (1846-1924) and Bettie Hall Ingram (1857-1908). The Ingrams did not live in the area and subdivided the property for speculative building between 1889 and 1909. In 1905, they agreed to sell the property at 250 S. 100 East to George D. Mateer. The transaction was recorded in 1908. A building permit indicates that the architect was Bernard o. Mecklenberg, and the builder was J. E. Swaner. The excavation of the foundation for Mateer's $4,000 house is noted in a Salt Lake Herald article dated June 26, 1908. Bernard Ollington Mecklenburg (1878-?) was born in Nebraska. He worked as an architect in Salt Lake between 1909 and the early 1920s when he moved to California. This house appears to one of his early commissions in the city. He designed several large apartment and commercial buildings in Salt Lake City. His most important work in Salt Lake was the Holy Cross Hospital, not far from the Mateer-Woolley House. Joseph Edmund Swaner (1868-1935) was born in Salt Lake City Utah. He lived further south on Tenth East and worked a variety of jobs before becoming a contractor after 1900. He moved to Oregon in the 1920s and then Los Angeles in the 1930s. George D. Mateer (1868-1942) was born in Tennessee. He came to Utah around 1899. His wife, Maguerite "Margie" Rebecca Simons Mateer (1874-1948), was born in West Virginia. He operated the G. D. Mateer department store and restaurant at 241 S. Main Street. In 1910, the Mateers sold the house and moved to Los Angeles. The first pennanent settlers of Salt Lake City were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the LDS or Monnon Church. 4 Brigham Young outlined the design of the city based on a concept known as the "City of Zion" plat originated by LDS Church founder Joseph Smith for laying out the city of Nauvoo, Illinois. Edward W. Tullidge, The History ofSalt Lake City and Its Founders. (Salt Lake City, Utah: Edward W. Tullidge, Publisher and Proprietor, 1880),47. 5 A ward (similar to a parish or congregation) is the smallest ecclesiastical unit of the LDS Church. The Bryant Neighborhood also includes part of the Tenth Ward, south of300 South. 6 Giraud, Elizabeth Egleston, Central City Historic District (Boundary Increase): Bryant Neighborhood. Woolley Jr. (1870-1966) and his wife, Mary Olivia Burt Woolley (1872-1932). They were married in 1892 and had five children. Edwin Woolley was a partner in the banking and brokerage firm of James A. Pollock and Company. The Woolleys lived in the house a few years, then rented it until 1919, when it was sold to Alfred J. Ridges. Dr. Alfred Joseph Ridges (1871-1971) was an oculist. He was married to Edna Marinda Hyde Ridges (1874-1943). They are listed on the 1930 census with three of their children and a servant. The house was worth $10,000 at the time of the census. Alfred J. Ridges sold the house in 1943 to Douglas F. and Alta R. Tanner. Douglas Floyd Tanner (1906-1986) lived there until his death. Alta Rose Tanner (1907-1999) sold the property to the current owner, Cynthia Cromer, in 1992 . . ., Common Label Information: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
