Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Taylor House is a two-story brick Victorian-era residence built circa 1889. 1 It is located at 226 S. 1000 East in Salt Lake City. The house is a side-passage plan house with a projecting two-story front wing. The house is built on a stone foundation. The brick is laid in a running bond. The fa~ade (east elevation) features a recessed front door to the north slightly recessed behind the projecting wing. The original house has a small comer porch. Around 1915, a large bungalowstyle full-width porch with square columns was built on the front. Recently the bungalow porch was removed and replaced with a nouveau Victorian porch. The porch has more slender columns and a square-post balustrade (circa 1990). The roof is asphalt shingle. The fa~ade has fish-scale shingles in the gable trim of the projecting wing. The main roof behind is hipped with a gab let. The original windows had Queen Anne lights in the upper sash, but these were replaced (circa 1990). On the main level, the parlor window is the original tripartite window. The secondary elevations have both flat lintel (second floor) and segmental arch (main floor) examples. On the rear (north) elevation, the house has a series of addition. The main two-story portion measures approximately 22 by 31 feet. By 1898 the house had a one-story frame addition on the rear, which was expanded with a second-story sleeping porch (circa 1925). A one-story enclosed porch was attached to the two-story frame part. The enclosed porches have been covered in wide aluminum siding. A concrete block portion was built circa 1970. On the interior, the house has 1,029 square feet of space on the main floor and 869 square feet in the upper floor. There is a total often rooms, including two bedrooms and one bath. The house faces east on a parcel of 0.12 acres. The front yard is lawn with mature trees. The sidewalk curves to the porch entrance. The north side yard is narrow. There is a shared concrete driveway on the south side of the house. There is a plywood covered workshop in the rear that is a non-contributing outbuilding. The immediate neighborhood includes one-story brick and frame residences built primarily between 1890 and 1925. The area is in the northeast quadrant of the Bryant Neighborhood and is surrounded by a residential mix of styles and types, mostly built in the early 1900s. The neighborhood also includes a few neighborhood-scale commercial and office buildings, two neighborhood churches, and the Holy Cross Hospital complex. 2 The Taylor House was evaluated as eligible/contributing when the Bryant Neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as part of a boundary increase for the Central City Historic District in 2001. The historic district was expanded a second time in 2002 and the buildings are currently part of the NRHP Salt Lake City East Side Historic District. The Taylor House was built within the historic period of the current NRHP district, defmed as 1870 to 1946 in the Bryant Neighborhood nomination. Despite the replacement windows and porch on the fa~ade, the Taylor House is one of the oldest extant houses in the neighborhood and a good example of the transition from more austere classical styles to the Victorian era. It is in good historic condition and contributes to the architectural and historical significance of the neighborhood. The tax cards give the earlier estimated construction date of 1880, but the house has similar details to the neighboring house built in 1889. The two churches are the LDS Church 11th Ward Meetinghouse (951 E. 100 South) and the S1. Paul's Episcopal Church (261 S. 900 East). Plat B was surveyed in 1848 as an eastern expansion of the city's first survey, Plat A, which was platted in August 1847 soon after the arrival ofMonnon settlers. 3 Plat B had the same characteristics as the first plat: ten-acre blocks, each containing eight lots of 1V4 acres. Streets were 132 feet wide. Originally each lot was allowed the construction of one house with a standard setback of 20 feet. The rear of the property was to be used for vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and outbuildings for subsistence livestock and poultry.4 The settlers were organized into wards, with the north part of the Bryant Neighborhood part of the Eleventh Ward. s Because of the rapid growth of Salt Lake City in the late nineteenth century, the semi-rural lots were subdivided and the neighborhood became more urban in character. Around the edges of the blocks, the modest homes of the first settlers were joined by the more substantial homes of the emerging middle-class, particularly in the first quarter of the twentieth century. Inner block streets such as Iowa Street were developed beginning in the 1890s. Multi-family housing for the working-class began to appear in the early 1900s. The neighborhood was easily accessible to the downtown and the University by a streetcar line along South Temple. The significance of the Taylor House falls within the contextual period, Transition, 1870 to 1900, and Mature Community, 1900-1925, as described in the Bryant Neighborhood nomination. The Taylor House is representative of the housing built for Salt Lake's emerging middle-class in the late nineteenth century. The first recorded deed to Plat B, Block 43, Lots 7 and 8 was a surveyor's deed to Alexander McRae in 1867. Edward Kessler received a mayor's deed for the north three-quarters of Lot 8 in 1873. The property changed hands three times before being acquired by Harriet C. Taylor in 1889. Harriet C. Quinney Taylor (1840-1899) was born in England. She was married to Stephen Taylor (1827-1870). They had five or six children. He died before she purchased the purchased the house. She was listed as a widow at the address in the city directories. After her death, the property passed to Amy Taylor Eckert (relationship not known). The house is a rental property on both the 1900 and 1910 census enumerations. In 1900, the house was occupied by George Smith (1857-?), a lawyer, his wife, Emma Smith (1859-?), their four children, and Emma's mother, Cordelia Aldrich (1835-1908). By 1920, the house may have been used as more ofa boarding house. J. C. Woodmansee, a doctor, was the head of household with eight family members, and two lodgers. Between 1912 and 1915, the property changed hands three times. The first long-tenn owner-occupants were Andrew and Sarah Johnson, who bought the house in 1915 and whose family owned it until 1976. Andrew Arthur Johnson (1880-1977) was a sales manager for a furniture company. Sarah Jane Sanderson (1881-1961) was the mother of four children. The family sold the property in 1976 to Carter M. and Doris M. Ballinger. The current owner, Charles Arthur Estes, owned the house on contract beginning in 1983 and received the deed in 1999. The first permanent settlers of Salt Lake City were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the LDS or Mormon Church. 4 Brigham Young outlined the design of the city based on a concept known as the "City of Zion" plat originated by LDS Church founder Joseph Smith for laying out the city of Nauvoo, Illinois. 5 A ward (similar to a parish or congregation) is the smallest ecclesiastical unit of the LDS Church.
