You may lose the watch he gave you And another you may claim, But remember, when you're tempted, To be careful of his name. 1 f It was fair the day you got it And a worthy name to wear; When he took it from his father There was no dishonor there. Through the years he proudly wore it, To his father he was true, And that name was clean and spotless When he passed it on o you. It is yours to wear forever, Yours, perhaps, some distant morning, To another boy to give, And you'll smile as did your father Smile above that baby there, If a clean name and a good name 2 You are giving him to wear." I was talking to a colleague at one of our local universities after a speech the other day. He said, I never know how to refer to you. There are so many names used, I just want to know what to call you. Some say, "Negro." Some say, "colored." Some say, "Afro-American." Some say, "Black." Some say, "AfricanAmerican." What should I call you? After the initial concern, I looked at him with certainty and said, "Just call me by my name. Call me Mf. Davis." ~fT!)y/ Many of us will do anything within our power to gain great riches. We want, in fact, crave and envy money. We break in banks and credit union, steal from the petty cash box, spend what we have and borrow what we need, and spend credit card limits with no intention of paying it back. It is not riches that make the person, but a good name. Silver and gale come and go but a good name will keep you. The text says, uA good name is rather to be chosen than great riches~ 4 and loving favour rather than silver and gold. N The young man had just been released form the military. He was looking for a job and got an interview. When the interview was over, the employer told him he was hired and should be ready to report for work on Monday. However, as the young man was leaving, the employer called the name of a family member and asked if he was related. When the young military veterans responded that that was his brother, the employer said, "Never mind, I have someone for the job already." 5 My daddy did not leave us any money but he left us land and a good name. If you don't have anything else going for you, crave a good name. For the Biblical good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold." We don't get to pick text in Proverbs 22: 1 says, "A and chose our own name. Somebody else choses when we are yet a baby the name we wear. Where that name has been and what has been done with it determines whether it is a good name or not and says a lot about who we are. When the angel announced His birth, Jesus was given a good name by God. He kept His name above reproach. He 6 never stole or cheated or lied. He honored His mother and His father. He was faithful to His word and loved everybody. He held eternal life in His hands and there was no other name under heaven given among men by which men might be saved. When all is said and done, it is the only name that matters in the end. That name is Jesus Christ. He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death. God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name which is above every name. That at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. vJ kct{-- n fL /J ro - 1? / u.J!.r;f /Uc1 tv1e |
